Maggie’s List Proves Politics is Women’s Work

In 2010, a group of dynamic conservative female leaders took note of the way Democrats were supporting women candidates for office and decided that they would do the same for Republican women. In 2010, Maggie’s List, a Federal Political Action Committee, was founded to raise awareness and funds to increase the number of conservative women elected to federal public office.

The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character. ~MARGARET CHASE SMITH

The organization’s name was taken from Margaret “Maggie” Chase Smith, the first woman elected to both houses of Congress. Maggie served in the U.S. House from 1940 to 1948 and the U.S. Senate from 1948 to 1972. Maggie became the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the presidency by either of the two major parties in 1964.

When people keep telling you that you can’t do a thing, you kind of like to try it. ~MARGARET CHASE SMITH

“Maggie” Chase Smith was a trailblazer who served on the Appropriations and Armed Services panels and was a crusader for free speech. Maggie represents one of American politics’ earliest and most enduring female voices.

Public service must be more than doing a job efficiently and honestly. It must be complete dedication to the people and the nation.”~MARGARET CHASE SMITH

One of the founders of Maggie’s List is political trailblazer Sandra Mortham, who served as the twenty-second Florida Secretary of State from 1995 to 1999. Mortham also served in the Florida House and was the first woman in Florida’s history to be nominated as Speaker of the House. Mortham continues to put her heart and soul into Maggie’s List, as evidenced by the long list of women the organization has endorsed who have gotten into office.

Sandra Mortham had this to say to Florida Jolt;

In 2010, I decided it was time for conservatives to step up to the plate and support our women who believe in our core principles of less governmental and more personal responsibility to receive the support that the Democrats provide through Emily’s List.  Maggie’s List has become a leader in helping fiscally conservative women across this country run for the U.S. House and U.S. Senate and endorsing in statewide races. ~Sandra Mortham

Anita Mitchell serves as Chairman on the Board of Directors for Maggie’s List. Mitchell is a Republican leader known as a significant player within the party. She is Margaritaville At Sea’s VP of External Affairs and Business Development. She organized a hugely successful “Stars on the Water” fundraiser for Maggie’s List for 2023 on the newly renovated Margaritaville At Sea, a beautiful cruise ship that cruises to the Bahamas from the Port of Palm Beach. Many people at the fundraiser stayed on the boat for a cruise to the Bahamas. Mitchell had this to say to Florida Jolt;

I’m very proud to be a board member over the years and the many good women whom we have endorsed and financially supported who are now serving in the US House and US Senate. ~Anita Mitchel
