According to the arrest affidavit, the victim, NOI (no other information), told police that he regularly allowed Maria Dawson, who is homeless and lives on the streets of Miami, to take showers at his Miami-Dade County Housing Authority apartment in the Jollivette complex located in the 2400 block of Northwest 63rd Street.

Dawson arrived at the victim’s apartment at approximately 1:00 p.m. to take a shower. A few minutes later, Dawson left the apartment without saying anything to the victim. The victim told the police officers that he saw Dawson leave without speaking, but he was busy cooking, so he didn’t try to catch up with her.

After a few more minutes, the victim smelled smoke coming from his bedroom. When he went to investigate and saw smoke coming from underneath the door. Dawson locked the door as she left, so the victim had to kick in the door. Once inside the bedroom, the victim saw fire and smoke coming from his closet with flames coming from a pile of clothes on the closet floor that had been set ablaze.

The victim attempted to put out the fire himself but was not successful. The fire department arrived and put the fire out, but the delay allowed significant damage to the apartment.

As the victim was explaining to the police what happened, a naked Dawson was spotted in the area and detained. According to the affidavit, Dawson “had an altered state of mind due to heavy drug use and claimed she had not slept in 17 days”

Dawson was arrested and transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital for medical clearance. After doctors gave her the OK, Officers transported her to the Dade County Jail and charged her with arson and attempted murder. She is still in custody and being held on a $20,000 bond.
