Battle Lines are Forming Over Artificial Intelligence

The battle lines are forming: will Artificial Intelligence be a boon or a bane for the future of human civilization?

AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and act like humans. In other words, AI involves computer systems and software that can perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, such as recognizing speech and written words, learning from experience, and making decisions.

Yahoo says by 2025, 90% of the internet will be generated by AI, by robots. At any rate, once AI becomes autonomous, self-governing, it’s a new ballgame. One side says AI could be the answer to a new way of living, by using probabilities to address and solve all human problems, including revolutionizing many fields such as medicine, finance and transportation. The other side says AI will create all kinds of negative impacts, such as the potential loss of jobs as AI takes over more tasks, or to develop autonomous weapons, or manipulates people’s behavior. Additionally, there are worries about the potential for AI to surpass human intelligence and become a threat to humanity.

In order for AI to be a boon for human civilization, it is important that it be developed and used in an ethical, responsible manner. This means ensuring that it is designed to benefit humanity and not harm it, and that it is subject to appropriate regulations and oversight. It is also important to consider the potential social and economic impacts of AI and to take steps to mitigate any negative consequences. However, the bugaboo is that if humans create the software and algorithms for AI, it won’t be objective, because human tendency is subjective. Humans bring their own biases, assumptions, and limitations to the development process. Ultimately, the future of AI will depend on how we choose to develop and use it. With careful consideration and responsible use, AI has the potential to be a great benefit to human civilization.

One potentially positive school of thought in this discussion is the case that can be made that AI will become the enemy of the legacy media. Many people consider traditional broadcast and print media to be a destructive force in our lives, as they monetize outrage. In too many instances, the media has taken every story that comes down the pike, spins it with bias and finds the best way to upset us, readers. All done in order to attract more eyeballs through conflict and the blurring of fact and fiction. AI, done right, will present reality and facts, not spin or fake news. The 4th estate news media should be terrified of AI’s potential to neutralize their influence.

Finally, an absolutely amazing aspect of AI is the emergence of programs like ChatGPT. This is an internet site where you can ask any question you like, and computer-created software algorithms will answer your question as though you were conversing with a human. It’s like conversational Wikipedia which can answer what you ask. ChatGPT has been trained to understand and generate human-like responses to various prompts or inputs. It analyses and learns patterns from a vast earth-wide ocean of text data, enabling it to generate content and relevant responses to a wide range of questions and conversations. It mimics the style, tone and structure of human language. It can be used for a variety of purposes, such as creating essays, language translation, customer service, educational purposes and entertainment. To give you an idea of its effectiveness, about half of this column was written by ChatGPT!
