Florida Man Tries to Beat Train – Train Wins

A Florida Man in Indian River County attempted to beat an oncoming freight train at the Old Dixie Highway and Highlands Avenue crossing. As you would expect, the result was a win for the freight train.

Indian River County Deputies stated the man was lucky to be alive when he attempted to beat the train, and his SUV got stuck in some gravel. The man was able to get out of his sports utility vehicle before the train made impact and was not hurt, but his vehicle was totaled.

On their Facebook page, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office posted a photo of the scene and warned drivers again not to attempt to beat the train stating, “Please, obey the safety equipment at railroad grade crossings. They are there to keep you safe.”

Folks! Please remember that depending on the length, weight, and speed, a train may need up to a full mile to come to a complete stop!

The Sheriff’s office is investigating the accident along with investigators from the Florida East Coast Railway Police Department.

The crossing was closed for approximately three hours before all the wreckage was cleared. The driver’s insurance had better be paid up; in addition to a totaled vehicle, there is significant damage to the crossing safety equipment, and those signals aren’t cheap.
