Accusations Against Delray Mayoral Candidate Tom Carney: A Nothing Burger

It’s campaign season in Delray Beach, meaning we can all expect unfounded accusations against candidates to fly daily. The latest is against mayoral candidate Tom Carney. The rumor mill is spreading the utterly false allegation that Carney fled the scene of a car accident and was charged with a DUI. Florida Jolt contacted Carney to find out the real story.

On February 12th, the Sun Sentinel published candidate questionnaires. Carney addressed the allegations right then and there regarding an incident from 2007 and one from 2017.

Have you ever been a party to a lawsuit, including bankruptcy or foreclosure? If so, provide details and disposition.

I was a defendant in a fender bender lawsuit in 2017; the case was settled.

Have you ever been charged or convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, including an adjudication of guilt withheld? If so, provide charges, dates, and terms of sentence.

Yes, I pulled out from 7th Ave. to George Bush Blvd one night and was hit broadside. My airbag deployed, causing cuts and bleeding from the windshield shattering. My brother came to help and was concerned that I might have some glass shards in my face. He encouraged me to walk to our nearby office to wash up and check for glass. It turned out I had a severe concussion, so not thinking clearly, I left for the short walk to go wash up. The police charged me with leaving the scene of an accident, but the charges were later dropped and the record expunged.

Some questions arose about the reason for leaving the scene for the 2007 accident. Alcohol was not involved, and the reason for heading to his office, mentioned in the sentinel article, makes for less salacious reading. He wanted to ensure he didn’t have glass from the accident on his face.

Carney was so open about the incident that he sent the police report from the 2016 incident to Florida Jolt. According to the report, Carney’s worst crime was not having his driver’s license and insurance. Carney says he can’t believe how far people will go back in someone’s history. When asked if there was anything else people should know from his past, he had this to say.

How far back are these people going to go? In third grade, I took a test and used a pen when I was supposed to use a pencil. I still got 100 on the test, by the way. Now you know all about me.

Delray Beach, when the mailers start filling your inbox, take it for what it is: a nothing burger.
