Over the Labor Day weekend, Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris stumbled through a series of awkward moments, including debuting a bizarre new accent, sidestepping reporters, and telling a bewildering tale about washing collard greens in her bathtub.
Harris traveled to Detroit, Michigan, on Monday for a rally. At the rally, she appealed to union workers and attempted to whip support in the battleground state. While delivering her speech, however, audience members noted an unnatural shift in her accent.
“You better thank a union member for the five-day work week,” Harris told the crowd in what many viewers described as a “phony,” thick southern accent.
“You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time.” ~ Kamala Harris during Motor City rally.
“This is her seventh new accent in four weeks,” Trump advisor Stephen Miller wrote on X. “She has literally never used this accent before. She grew up in Canada. Phoniest politician in all of politics.”
The Trump campaign also reposted Harris’ speech, calling her use of an accent “cringe.”
“What did I just watch… what’s with this new accent?” Libs of TikTok creator Chaya Raichik posted. “The fakeness and cringe here is off the charts.”

Other critics pointed out that Harris’ accent seemingly disappeared at her next rally stop. Just hours after her Motor City rally in Pittsburgh, the Vice President resumed campaigning in her usual dialect.
“Literally 5 hours apart,” wrote Pro-Trump X account Johnny MAGA. “The difference is insane.”

Harris did not accept questions before her Labor Day campaigning, either. While en route to her Detroit rally, Harris breezed past reporters with headphones in, apparently not hearing questions from reporters.

On Friday, Harris had another odd run-in with voters while campaigning in Georgia. In a video published by her campaign, Harris is heard telling a story about a friend who used to host an annual Christmas party. “She asked me to make the greens for the party every year,” Harris said.
“And I am not lying to you that I would make so many greens that I’d need to wash them in the bathtub,” Harris said, laughing. “I’m telling you the truth.”
“The only greens I care about are the paper ones I’ve lost under your administration,” one commenter replied to the campaign. “We are all poorer because of you.”
Since giving her first sit-down interview of the campaign last week, Harris has had a series of awkward moments go viral on social media.
With the honeymoon phase of the Democratic nomination long over, her campaign reportedly plans to go on the defensive, with events planned for several “safe” blue states this week. On Wednesday, Harris will visit New Hampshire to shore up support, while running mate Tim Walz will return to his home state after a surge in approval for Trump.
