DeSantis Representative Christina Pushaw Schools Randi Weingarten for Revisionist History

The American Federation of Teacher’s Unions President Randi Weingarten gave a “major address” this week criticizing Governor Ron DeSantis and others, but Christina Pushaw and other supporters of DeSantis were quick to call out where Weingarten wasn’t telling the truth.

According to the American Prospect, Weingarten touted a planned ATF program designed to circumvent the rules set by local governments surrounding public school curricula and content. According to Weingarten, the program includes a hotline “for teachers, parents, or students to use if they need support.”

“It’s a place to call if you’ve been told to remove a book from the curriculum or from the library or that there are topics that can’t be discussed in your classes, or that you cannot teach honestly and appropriately, or if politicians in your district or state are targeting vulnerable student groups to score political points.”

Weingarten isn’t alone in feeling they know better than local governments and attempting to defy DeSantis. Broward County has tried the same thing, but both have misrepresented the actual law. In reality, the standards set for school personnel are to “err on the side of caution” and to be willing to read the material in public.

“Media specialists should always err on the side of caution when selecting materials. It is good practice to assess whether or not you, as an adult making book-selection decisions, would be comfortable reading aloud the material in question in a public meeting. If you would not be comfortable reading the material in a public setting, then you should lean toward not making the material available in a public school library for children.”

The only exception is books banned for being inappropriately sexually explicit for young children, such as “This Book is Gay,” which has already been at issue due to sexually explicit content, claims about sexual morality, instructions regarding sex acts, and a dating app. These types of regulations are what Weingarten is referring to as not teaching “appropriately” and as “targeting vulnerable student groups.”

Multiple observers on Twitter were quick to point this out. Weingarten has phrased her push as a defense of education, writing, “A great nation does not fear the education of its citizens. All of its citizens. I wonder what people like Gov DeSantis are afraid of.” However, DeSantis Defender Christina Pushaw quickly pointed out Weingarten’s inconsistency on the issue.

“Governor DeSantis opened schools in 2020. Meanwhile you opposed him relentlessly and fought to deny kids the right to go to school for over a year after FL was back to normal. Who really “fears education”?”

Another user teased Weingarten for hypocrisy in turning off replies to her tweet, as she is blocking the free flow of information.

A different Twitter observer floated the idea that Weingarten is just attempting to keep her high salary paid by Union dues, which Pushaw seemed to agree with.

If true, this motive could partially explain Weingarten’s focus on Florida and Governor DeSantis, who has resolved not to mandate teacher Union dues, allowing educators to make up their own minds on paying dues.
