Dem North Carolina Gov. Declares ‘State of Emergency’ To Stop School Choice Bill

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, recently declared a “state of emergency” in a desperate attempt to block the state’s Republican-dominated legislature from overriding his veto of Senate Bill 406 and passing a landmark school choice bill.

Cooper says the bill would cause “damage that will set back our schools for a generation.”

The Republican bill would give parents far greater control over where their kids go to school by providing vouchers to help pay for attendance at private schools. The money is taken from the student’s public school fund and given to parents at all income levels, thus requiring no new taxes to pay for what many see as an opportunity for better education.

The bill would also give massive benefits to public high school students. If the state of emergency is circumvented, students can graduate high school in three years instead of four – in effect, allowing the best students to be rewarded for their drive and effort without harming the rest of the class. Students who graduate early would still have to earn as many credits as their four-year-graduating peers.

Though parents already have a choice to send their children to private schools, tuition costs frequently make them out of reach. With the money that would have been spent on the child’s public school attendance now being given for tuition costs, the Republican measure will give parents of all classes unprecedented access to often better-performing private schools.

Republican lawmakers have celebrated the proposal. The lead sponsor of the bill remarked at a press conference that.

“Today’s a great day for kids – and that’s what this bill is about.”

“Constituents continually support increased school choice and more access to educational options for families,” said Republican State Representative Amy Galey in an email to a local Fox News affiliate, “Not every school is a good fit for every child, and when there is a disconnect, the parents should have options to be sure that their child is learning and growing appropriately.”

The Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina and 2024 Governor hopeful slammed the blatant abuse of power by the current Democrat governor, saying on Twitter:

“Once again, we see leaders in government telling you that they know what’s best for your child. Our Governor has gone so far as to use the words “state of emergency” as a political prop. However, words like this weren’t said when Democrats had control of the legislature and teachers were receiving pay cuts and being furloughed.”

He finished his remarks by celebrating parents’ rights, saying that “they know what their children need better than a bureaucrat.”

The Democrats have relentlessly and uniformly defended the bizarre decision by Governor Roy Cooper. State Senator Ashton Clemmons argued that the voucher program weakens public schools and isn’t accessible – despite the bill providing money to families of all incomes.

“I believe our public dollars should be spent strengthening the public schools that are accessible to each and every child in our state.”

Despite Democrat’s chief concern being that the bill will make education “less accessible,” commenters were quick to point out that the wealthy governor had the requisite money, without vouchers, to send his child to a private school.
