Chicago has a crime problem. Obviously.
In 2022 alone, more than 3,000 Chicago residents were shot; of those victims, more than 630 were killed. Cops are making record-low arrests, and businesses are increasingly finding it impossible to turn a profit amidst rampant looting.
When Walmart announced this week that they would be closing four of their stores in the city, Chicago Democrats were spurred to action… but rather than demand a crackdown on crime, they are demanding Walmart remain open and suffer the crime wave along with them.
While the retail chain did not directly point the finger at Democrat pro-crime policy for their closings, a press statement issued by the company paints a startling picture of just how hostile blue cities have become toward businesses.
“The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago – these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years. The remaining four Chicago stores continue to face the same business difficulties, but we think this decision gives us the best chance to help keep them open and serving the community.”
The fact that even the largest company in the world by revenue cannot find a way to profit in Chicago should have been a wake-up call to the city. Still, Democrat leadership focused their anger on Walmart, threatening to boycott them if they left.

“We have healthcare deserts. We have food deserts. And we wonder why our communities look like they look! That we have violence every single day!” shouted one speaker.
“It is not just on us, it is on the corporate citizens that come into our community and ravage our community. And Walmart, you should absolutely be ashamed of yourselves. You are the reasons that our communities lack the investment that they have.”
“If Walmart leaves us, we will leave Walmart,” another Democrat activist threatened.

The decision by Walmart to shutter its stores in Chicago follows just one month after the company announced it would close its last two locations in Portland, Oregon. Following a similar pattern, the retail chain issued another statement explaining the decision, heavily laced with corporate-speak.
“The decision to close these stores was made after a careful review of their overall performance. We consider many factors, including current and projected financial performance, location, population, customer needs, and the proximity of other nearby stores when making these difficult decisions.”
Following Walmart’s decision to close its Chicago stores, National Review Online columnist T. Becket Adams offered an interesting observation,
“Amazing. Same day it’s announced Chicago will host the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Walmart announces the closure of 4 (four!) Chicago stores.”
