Trump Taps Elon, Vivek, Rubio for New Admin
President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that several key allies will be joining his new administration, including tech mogul Elon Musk, former Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, among others. In the week since election day, Trump has been busy staffing his future White House to “restore success” to the Oval Office. Trump’s picks will take office following his January 20 inauguration.
Musk and Ramaswamy, who previously aided Trump in his 2024 election effort, were named to head the new “Department of Government Efficiency,” or DOGE. In a statement, Trump explained the department would function similarly to a task force and will “provide advice and guidance from outside of Government.” The DOGE is expected to work in conjunction with the Office of Management and Budget “to drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.”
Trump also announced Tuesday that Rubio will serve as Secretary of State and Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security.
Rubio, who is known to be tough on China, currently sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee and Foreign Relations Committee. He has echoed Trump’s calls to bring an end to the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. This year, Rubio voted against sending $95 billion in aid to Ukraine.
Noem would replace Alejandro Mayorkas at the head of DHS. Noem is a noted critic of the Biden administration’s border policy. She was the first governor to deploy their state’s national guard to the southern border in Texas, eventually doing so a total of eight times to control the crisis. Trump said Noem would work closely with his new “border czar” Tom Homan.

Trump also announced his pick for Secretary of Defense would be army veteran and Fox News host Pete Hegseth. A combat veteran with two bronze stars, Hegseth served in both the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars before getting a degree from Harvard University. He will also be the youngest Secretary of Defense in nearly fifty years, having been 21 years old at the time of the September 11 attacks.
“Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First. With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice — Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.” Trump said in his announcement.
