Republican Mike Letsky to Run Against Former Dem Bob Weinroth for School Board in Palm Beach County

Republican Mike Letsky, a fourteen-year Boca Raton resident, is running for the school board in District 5 against former Democrat and former Palm Beach County Commissioner Robert Weinroth.

Soon-to-be-retired Frank Barbieri currently holds the seat. Palm Beach County has been blue for years, but November 2022 gave us the DeSantis effect and more Republican seats than anyone thought possible. What Palm Beach County didn’t get was any Republican school board members.

Mike Letsky is a Republican Boca Raton resident, business owner, husband, and father running for school board against former County Commissioner Bob Weinroth.

Former Democrat County Commissioner Bob Weinroth quietly switched parties in January and is now running for school board as a Republican. Like it or not, school board issues have become partisan, and there are several questions candidates will have to answer if they hope to be elected. Weinroth chose to interview with someone he felt comfortable with, a left-wing legacy media hack, Randy Schultz, who has never met a Republican he liked. In this interview, Weinroth expressed his dislike of both parties and opposed the Parental Rights in Education law expansion to eighth grade.

Weinroth also stated that he was opposed to partisan elections and school vouchers. Essentially, Weinroth is against every new Republican bit of legislation going through the Florida House this session. He now has an opponent.

Former County Commissioner Bob Weinroth is now a Republican running for school board. He now has an opponent, Mike Letsky.

Mike Letsky is an engineer who lives with his wife and two children, a boy, and a girl, in Boca Raton. His children both currently attend District 5 schools. His wife is a pediatrician. Letsky is an advocate for children’s education. He is a business owner and father running because he wants to see a significant change in Palm Beach County schools. His wife supports his run wholeheartedly. The thing I noticed immediately about Letsky is that he’s open, and his answers aren’t canned. That’s probably because he’s not a career politician. This is his first run for office.

One of the reasons Letsky is running is because when it was time for schools to open again during the pandemic, they didn’t even have a plan. He thought to himself;

“I’m a great planner. I’m an engineer. I need to run. I can do this.”

Letsky supports expanding the Parental Rights in Education, dubbed by opponents as “Don’t Say Gay 2.0,” through eighth grade. He feels that gender identity is a mental health issue that should be discussed with parents so that parents can make decisions regarding their children. Children should be protected from “transition ideology.”

It is the parent’s responsibility to teach children about sexuality. Children are vulnerable and must be protected. He is also in support of removing certain books and materials in schools. He doesn’t believe in “gender-affirming” surgery, hormone replacement, name change, pronoun change, or bathroom change for school-aged children. He doesn’t believe in the “over-sexualization of children,” including books. He doesn’t understand at what point “this all went wrong,” but he knows things must change. “Let’s stick with reading, writing, math, and science.”

Letsky feels more needs to be done with school safety. He believes in permit-less carry but says, “Let’s see what happens. This is a change, and many won’t like it.” He believes with appropriate training; it’s OK for teachers to have guns in school. He’d like additional police officers in school, and he’d like to see metal detectors in schools as well.

Letsky believes that vaccinating children should be a decision left to parents. This is not only for COVID vaccines but also for diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, and polio. The same goes for school administrators and teachers. It should be their choice.

Regarding school vouchers, Letsky says;

Every student deserves to have access to the highest quality of education, and parents should have the choice of where their child attends school.

Letsky says it’s easy enough to find out what party someone is right now and supports partisan elections and term limits for school board members. Elections should be transparent.

When asked about his opponent Bob Weinroth, he said;

One of the reasons I’m doing this is because when I discussed taking better care of special needs children during the pandemic, Weinroth just smiled, said thank you, and did absolutely nothing. I don’t trust Bob Weinroth and his sudden party change. I don’t trust him with my children. He’s doing this because he’s a career politician.

It is too early in this race to predict what will happen. Chances are, there will be more candidates who file for this seat. One thing is for sure, school board races are about children and the future. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
