DeSantis Demands Accountability for ‘Bureaucratic Failures’ After Trump Shooting
Governor Ron DeSantis issued a strong condemnation of the federal government Sunday, arguing that “bureaucratic failures” led to the near assassination of former President Donald Trump. DeSantis demanded an investigation into the Secret Service’s conduct, but called into question whether the bureaucracy’s findings can be trusted. Such failures, DeSantis said, “almost never result in any accountability.”
“This time needs be to be different,” DeSantis said in a statement published to X. “Our country is in the peril its in partly because the DC ruling class has consistently evaded responsibility for its failures.” The Governor questioned why the gunman was allowed to get so close to Trump during his rally.
“And there does need to be an investigation regarding the security protocols used in Butler. The answer to the following question must be provided in short order: how did someone, armed with a rifle, get on top of a roof 150 yards away from the stage?”
As a congressman, DeSantis witnessed firsthand the 2017 Congressional baseball shooting that left six people injured. He compared the two attacks in his statement.
“Biden tells us to trust the bureaucracy to investigate the assassin’s motive. But the feds categorized the crazed, leftist congressional baseball shooter as ‘suicide by cop’ — even though the shooter had a well-documented left-wing political bent and made sure that the players on the field were Republicans before attacking.”

The U.S. Secret Service says they are currently investigating the events leading up to Saturday’s attack, which saw 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fire upon the former President with an AR-style rifle. Crooks was shot and killed after firing several rounds towards the rally, killing audience member Corey Comperatore.
The agency said that the gunman fired from an “elevated position outside of the rally venue.” An analysis by the Associated Press indicated that the rooftop was disturbingly close to the former President–within 150 meters. Later, Trump said that he was bloodied after being “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”
Authorities also discovered explosives stored in Crooks’ vehicle outside the rally. Law enforcement has said the attack was an attempted assassination, but the FBI has not said what motivated Crooks. The bureau has said that it believes Crooks acted alone.

In the wake of the attack, Trump says that he is re-writing his speech to the Republican National Convention to put greater emphasis on unity. The four day convention is scheduled to begin Monday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but the former President is not expected to take the stage until Thursday.
“Based on [Saturday]’s terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin, and The Republican National Convention, by two days, but have just decided that I cannot allow a ‘shooter,’ or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Sunday.
He later followed up his comments with another post calling to “UNITE AMERICA!”
