Local Cuban-American Lourdes Casanova Runs for Palm Beach County Judge

Lourdes Casanova, a self-made local attorney and daughter of Cuban refugees, is running for County Court Judge Group 2 in Palm Beach County. She is motivated by her commitment to community service.

” I just find it to be fulfilling to be a well-rounded individual. I think it’s important that you not only work in the professional world, but you work to improve your community.” Casanova told Florida Jolt.

After fleeing persecution in their home country of Cuba for speaking out and even losing Casanova’s uncle to the regime, her parents made their way to Florida.

A lifelong local, Casanova was Valedictorian at Royal Palm Beach High before getting her undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Florida, making her a “double gator.”

Casanova spent three years at the State attorney’s office before starting her own multi-practice firm, specializing in small claims, civil, and criminal defense.

Casanova explained to the Jolt how her unique blend of work experience sets her apart as a judicial candidate.

“I think the distinguishing factor for me as a candidate would be two things: I’ve been a prosecutor, and I’ve been in private practice. So I’ve been in both the government sector and the private sector. I run a multi-practice firm, but more importantly, I’m the only candidate who has run a law firm or a business.  So I know I’m going to be efficient in court.”

Casanova discussed how that experience afforded her a unique variety of perspectives on the law, preventing bias to any particular field or result.

“I’m also the only one with all three of those things in the county court experience. As I said, I’ve litigated in the criminal, civil, and traffic divisions of our county court system. So I have the county court experience. I have the executive leadership skills by way of running a business and a Bar Association and active community involvement.”

Casanova also mentioned that her extensive litigation experience affords her first-hand knowledge of the role and importance of judges.

Beyond her legal experience, Casanova has put her community first in various ways. She is the President of the PBC Hispanic Bar Association, a Special Olympics Volunteer, and deeply involved in the Florida Bar Association.

When asked about her judicial philosophy, she kept it simple.

“I believe in the rule of law. I believe in following the rule of law. I believe in the separation of powers.”

“I’ve been here since I was three, and just the hard work that I saw my parents. I saw them work tirelessly. I witnessed them work tirelessly to provide a better life for their children, and that motivated me to succeed academically and professionally and give back to my community.” Casanova said.

“This is why I went from student to valedictorian to prosecutor to owner of a multi-practice firm, and that’s also why I’m involved in the community and running for a judge.”
