CBS Under Fire for Covering Up Kamala’s Support of BLM Rioters
CBS News is facing backlash after running a false report Thursday in an attempt to bury Vice President Kamala Harris’ record of supporting Black Lives Matter rioters. The article, which CBS affiliate WCCO News published, accused GOP nominee Donald Trump of “misleading” voters with his characterization that Harris had supported “dangerous criminals” by boosting the Minnesota Freedom bail fund.
The outlet wrote that Trump had ‘falsely accused’ Harris this week of ‘donating’ to the fund, which later paid the $2,000 bond of murderer Shawn Michael Tillman. In fact, Harris issued a fundraising call for the organization in 2020 during the height of the Black Lives Matter riots. Nowhere in Trump’s comments, however, does he accuse Harris of directly contributing to the fund.
“One of the dangerous criminals Kamala helped bail out of jail was Shawn Michael Tillman,” Trump said at a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina. “You know that name. A repeat offender who, with Harris’s help, was set free. He then went on to murder a man on a train platform in St. Paul, Minnesota, shooting him in cold blood six times, lying on the ground.” ~ WCCO News
The report was soon followed by a community note on X, which clarified that Harris had, in fact, supported the bail fund.
“Kamala Harris promoted the MN freedom fund, and the post is still active on X,” the note said, linking to Harris’ comments from four years prior.
“If you’re able to, chip in now to the [Minnesota Freedom Fund] to help post bail for those protesting on the ground in Minnesota,” Harris wrote at the time.
In the months that followed, the fund’s beneficiaries would come to include numerous violent criminals, including accused rapists and murderers.

Backlash against CBS intensified after the GOP rapid response account’ RNC Research’ resurfaced a 2022 interview between Harris and WCCO News, in which she was questioned her support for the bail fund.
“Do you have any thoughts about this?” the interviewer asked, referring to the slew of violent offenders the fund had helped put back on the street.
“I have always been a supporter of peaceful protests,” Harris said, avoiding the question. “People are playing political games right now.”
Over ten thousand comments were left under the article within the first 12 hours of it being posted to X, with the vast majority being critical of CBS’s reporting.
“I’m actually really disturbed to see a local legacy media outlet boldly lie like this to the public,” wrote independent journalist Andy Ngo. “You will not gaslight us.”
CBS eventually rewrote its headline, dropping the claim that Trump had “falsely accused” Harris.

Major news outlets around the country have been rallying around the Harris campaign this week in what the Trump campaign describes as an effort to “rewrite” the Vice President’s history. Since Tuesday, several left-leaning papers, including Axios and NBC News, have begun rejecting Harris’ longstanding label of “border czar” in a bid to downplay her role in the ongoing border crisis. This shift comes despite these outlets having used the moniker in their reporting since 2021.
“Kamala’s campaign is scrambling to rewrite history on her failures as Border Czar, but we have the receipts,” the Trump campaign said in a statement Wednesday. “Americans will hold her accountable when they vote for President Trump in November.”
