Biden Signs Executive Order-Federal Agencies to Prioritize “Environmental Justice,” Attacks Republicans
President Joe Biden signed an executive order at the Rose Garden on Friday, directing every governmental agency to incorporate “environmental justice” into its mission through the new creation of the White House Office of Environmental Justice.

The order creates the office within the White House Council on Environmental Quality to coordinate environmental justice initiatives across federal agencies.

Biden tweeted out a video commemorating the order.
“When I was elected president we vowed to take action on the most ambitious climate and environmental justice agenda in American history. That’s exactly what we did with your support….Under this order, environmental justice will be the mission of the entire government, woven directly into how we work with state, local, tribal and territorial government. We’re making real progress on the most ambitious environmental justice agenda in history. With this executive order, we’ll go even further.”
When I met with environmental justice leaders, their stories about pollution were unforgettable.
Imagine being scared to death about what the air or water is doing to your kids.

What precisely “environmental justice” means, in reality, is unclear. Especially in the context of the President’s commitment, “Under this order, environmental justice will become the responsibility of every single federal agency.” He did not specify how organizations like the FBI or IRS will take “environmental justice” into account.

Biden cited climate change as a crisis that motivated the act, claiming “the science is undeniable” regarding climate change’s effects, as justification for his particular response.
“I’m not waiting to tackle the climate crisis. The signs are unmistakable. The science is undeniable. And the cost of inaction keeps mounting.”

The timing is no accident; Biden noted that his announcement coincided with Earth Day.

During the press conference, Biden touted his past action on environmental issues in bills like the “Inflation Reduction Act,” which authorized massive new governmental spending. Biden largely stuck to the non-controversial portions, like air sensors and planting trees.
“We’re investing in air quality sensors in communities near factories, so people who live near them can know what the risk is and how safe the air is,” he said, adding that “we’re planting millions of new trees to cool down our city streets.”
However, the President ripped into congressional Republicans for their moves against more controversial sections of his legislation. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy put forth the recent proposal. In exchange for a debt limit increase, several clean energy tax credits would be repealed, including provisions within the IRA. The alternative would be to allow for increased spending allowance with no guarantee of more fiscal discipline.

“The MAGA Republicans in Congress want to repeal climate protections in the Inflation Reduction Act. They’d rather threaten to default the U.S. economy … than get rid of $30 billion in taxpayer subsidies to an oil industry that made $200 billion last year,” Biden said.
Just this week, we learned that MAGA Republicans in Congress want to repeal the climate investments our Administration has made.
They'd rather threaten to default on the U.S. economy than cut a dime of the $30 billion in taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil.
Imagine that.

Despite what the President says, it should be noted that Republicans are not giving subsidies to oil companies but pulling expensive subsidies to renewables. Aside from being motivated by a desire to lower governmental spending, the subsidies also may increase energy prices for Americans by artificially raising demand, disproportionately harming the working poor and middle-class Biden claims to fight for. At the same time, the subsidized companies get richer, and the higher prices increase political calls for more enormous subsidies. So the cycle repeats, pushing costs ever higher.
