Florida Raises Age Limit to Attend Sexual Performances, Pride Parade Cancelled by Organizers

Treasure Coast Pridefest canceled their upcoming Pride Parade ahead of Governor Ron DeSantis’ predicted signature on a bill prohibiting exposing minors to performances that are sexual.

The bill includes a variety of provisions along these lines, including authorizing the “Division of Hotels & Restaurants of DBPR to fine, suspend, or revoke the license of any public lodging establishment or public food service establishment if establishment admits child to adult live performance.” The bill authorizes [the] Division to impose specified fines for violations; specifies division may revoke or suspend license of person found to be maintaining licensed premises that admits child to adult live performance; prohibits person from knowingly admitting child to adult live performance.”

The bill also defines the exposure of children to sexualized performances as constituting “immediate serious danger to public health, safety, or welfare;” and, along with punishments for private entities, strictly prohibits any governmental agency from violating the standards.

The bill defines the regulated “Adult Live performances” as involving a “live audience which, in whole or in part, depicts or simulates nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, or specific sexual activities as those terms are defined in s. 847.001, lewd conduct, or the lewd exposure of prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts….”

However, the bill clarifies that an adult live performance “1. Predominantly appeals to a prurient, shameful, or morbid interest;  2. Is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community of this state as a whole with respect to what is suitable material or conduct for the age of the child present;  and  3. Taken as a whole, is without serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for the age of the child present.”

The law has proven effective. In response to these restrictions, Treasure Coast Pridefest announced Thursday in a Facebook post that it will no longer have a parade, and its event will be modified for people aged 21 and older.

“After multiple meetings with city officials, it is with a heavy heart that Pride Alliance of the Treasure Coast has to announce that this weekend’s Pridefest will now be a 21 and older event.”

The group also announced they would continue marketing to kids in the future.

“We will be making an announcement in the near future about a family-friendly Party in the Park where our youth can celebrate…”

The troubling implication is that the original event was not “family-friendly” by the group’s own admission, and they intended to allow children admittance to the sexually explicit event. The group said they were “obviously upset and dishearten[ed]” by the age increase.

The bill is one of three measures to protect children from gender ideology recently put on the Florida House Floor. The other two ban transgender surgery for minors and removes all transgender surgery from being covered by insurance.

Supporters of the child surgery ban, such as State Rep. John Snyder, have expressed the practice does far more harm than good.

“Really, it’s based on the simple notion that the science has not been settled, and in fact, there’s been growing revelations that gender reassignment surgeries on minors, that puberty blockers and some of the medications that are being prescribed in fact are doing tremendous amounts of harm to our kids,”
