You Done?: Newsom Continues to Whine About DeSantis, Gets Ignored
In a recent interview, California Governor Gavin Newsom attacked Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, claiming that he’s “scared” and marking the latest shot he’s taken at the man without being able to goad a response.
Newsom interviewed on Inside with Jen Psaki, an MSNBC program hosted by former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who worked for Joe Biden in the first half of his presidency.

When asked about DeSantis deciding to sign a permitless carry legalization bill without a live audience, Nesom accused the Florida Governor of being “scared to death.” He claimed that DeSantis was “scared of the people, scared of the public.” He said that the people of Florida “overwhelmingly oppose that position.”
Despite his claims, the Florida legislature was voted to be a Republican supermajority last midterms. The truth of Newsom’s popularity claims will be tested the next time election season rolls around.
What’s more, Newsom claimed that the bill completely waived background checks.
“No background checks. None? Really? No training why would we do that with weapons of war? That’s extreme in the extreme.”
Psaki herself said, “That’s what permitless means.” Newsom is overstating his case here. The bill does not ban background checks for those looking to own a gun; those requirements remain in place. The concealed carry bill removes additional red tape surrounding the right to carry a legalized purchased firearm outside one’s house.
Newsom then went down a laundry list of talking points, starting with abortion. However, Newsom had a Freudian slip in his phrasing, claiming DeSantis was “extreme” for mandating pregnant women “have to bear the child” in almost all cases after six weeks.
The California Governor also hit on the recent mass shooting in Nashville, claiming Republican opposition to restrictive gun control as a response means they do not care about protecting life. In the same breath, Newsom dismissed mental health issues out of hand. He did not mention increased security as a potential solution and even claimed the shootings have become “normalized.” Newsom also endorsed the invasion of the Tenessee capitol building by protestors last week due to his sympathy for their cause, despite his severe condemnations of January 6.

One woman on Twitter user took the time to respond to Newsom’s policy prescription, speaking from personal concerns and experiences.

In another interview with Brian Taylor Moore, Newsom got on DeSantis’s case about educational policy, again attempting to play psychiatrist with the Florida Governor.
“Make no mistake, this is a full-on assault on higher education, academic freedom … Every single thing this guy does, he does with intention. Because he’s a weak guy masquerading as if he’s a strong guy, so he takes on the most vulnerable,”
Newsom has also publicly attacked DeSantis for keeping sexually explicit material and performances away from children, all while his state sufferers from crippling crime, homelessness, and economic issues.

DeSantis deputy press secretary Jeremy Redfern pointed out this dynamic on Twitter.
“@GovRonDeSantis: spends his time governing on behalf of Floridians, implementing conservative policy, and spreading Florida’s blueprint for success.
@GavinNewsom: spends his time talking about Governor DeSantis.”

However, DeSantis’s office hasn’t bothered to give Newsom an official response.
