WATCH: Dem. Says Congress Will Stop Trump With ‘Civil War Conditions’

Video surfaced this week of a top Democrat lawmaker threatening to stop former President Trump from taking office if re-elected this year, even if it means imposing “civil war conditions.” Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MA) says that Congress could invoke the insurrection clause of the U.S. Constitution on January 6, 2025, thereby “disqualifying” the GOP nominee.

Raskin is considered a leading anti-Trump voice in Congress. Immediately after Trump’s second impeachment, he was named lead manager of the prosecution by then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He currently serves as the ranking member of the U.S. House Oversight Committee.

His comments were caught on camera in February at a book talk in Washington D.C., with video surfacing Monday on X.

“What can be put into the Constitution can slip away from you very quickly and the greatest example going on right before our very eyes is section three of the 14th Amendment,” Raskin said, referring to the insurrection clause. “Which [the Supreme Court is] just disappearing with a magic wand as if it doesn’t exist even though it could not be clearer what it’s stating,”

“And then they want to kick it to Congress so it’s going to be up to us on January 6, 2025 to tell the rampaging Trump mobs that he’s disqualified and we need bodyguards for everybody in civil war conditions all because the nine justices – not all of them but these justices who have not many cases to look at every year, not that much work to do – a huge staff, great protection, simply do not want to do their job and interpret what the great 14th Amendment means,” Raskin said.

Since surfacing Monday, the video of Raskin’s calls for “civil war conditions” has received millions of views on social media.

Raskin has been very open about wanting to use lawfare to thwart a second Trump administration. In February — the same month his “civil war” comments were recorded — his office posted to Facebook that Trump should be “disqualified” from returning to office.

Thwarting the will of voters to block the GOP nominee, Raskin says, will strengthen American democracy.

“Disqualifying Trump from office under Section III of the 14th Amendment doesn’t undermine democracy–insurrection does that.

The framers of the 14th Amendment sought to protect democracy against violent attack–and our Supreme Court should too.” ~ Rep. Jamie Raskin via Facebook

In August 2023, Raskin iterated the same point in a CNN interview, saying that the 14th Amendment offered a “clear and unequivocal statement” on Trump’s “disqualif[ication].”

Raskin’s latest remarks followed in the wake of a decision by Colorado’s Secretary of State to disqualify Trump from the state’s primary ballots, citing the 14th Amendment. After the Supreme Court ruled against the decision and forced Colorado to restore Trump to the ballot, Raskin lamented that voters would be allowed to choose for themselves.

On the eve of the ruling, Raskin told his fellow Democrats that “What that might mean … it’s really up to Congress on Jan. 6, 2025 to disqualify him at the counting of electoral college votes, which really could lead to something akin to a civil war,”
