Washington State to Publicly Fund Abortion Pill Vending Machines
Public universities and community colleges in Washington State will soon offer students an unusual new option at their vending machines: “morning after” abortion-on-demand pills, colloquially known as “plan B.”
Washington state has pledged to offer “emergency abortion access” to the young demographic in response to the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, which saw federal abortion protections, Roe v. Wade, removed from U.S. law.
The Evergreen State will be the first in the country to offer on-demand publicly-funded abortion pills to students.

Beginning in 2024, the state will be offering tertiary education institutions grants – effectively loans that don’t need to be paid back – of up to $10,000 each, with a cash reserve of more than 200,000 dollars being prepared in anticipation of receiving dozens of applications.
and removal of important FDA safety requirements (REMS) from the abortion pill, so that the pills could be ordered online — or by vending machine! — delivered and used with no medical supervision whatsoever. This is quickly coming to fruition, despite the fact that pill /cont

Calling the abortion mechanism “comprehensive reproductive healthcare,” a University of Wisconsin student who lobbied the Washington state legislature defended the measure.
“It’s really significant to have governmental state support for this… But there’s still a lot of existing unmet needs at our public university campuses across the state, and we really need to expand access as much as we can for comprehensive reproductive health care for students.” ~Taylor Riley to the Seattle Times
Pro-abortion groups have celebrated the massively increased access that college students will have. Kelly Cleland, the executive director of the American Society for Emergency Contraception, went as far as to say she was “excited” that more students would be able to get abortions.
“Since Dobbs, we’ve had about a fourfold increase in interest from people reaching out to us to say, ‘Hey we need to do something on our campus to improve [emergency contraception] access. I’m so excited about what’s happening in Washington, and I think these student leaders have been so instrumental in making this happen.” ~Kelly Cleland to the Seattle Times
Advocates for the pill say the vending machine gives the abortion-receiver unprecedented privacy in making their choice. In particular, it gives students – who are frequently on their parent’s healthcare plans – the ability to terminate a pregnancy without it showing up in any official records, thus hiding it from parents.
Cleland continued her statement, saying that on-demand abortion pills in vending machines “empower” the youth.
“I think the vending machines really empower young people to take matters into their own hands and not have to basically get permission from an adult to get emergency contraception.”

Though Washington is distinct in its taxpayer-funded abortion pills, universities and colleges across the country have worked hard to give students access to abortion. In many cases, students have more access to abortion after the dismantling of Roe v. Wade and federal abortion protection.
Republicans working relentlessly to protect the unborn face an uphill battle against pharmaceutical companies, a radically pro-life Gen Z, and even their fellow Republicans. Several GOP governors have rebuffed the Republican Party’s pro-life leaning by signing bills that expand protection for over-the-counter abortion pills.
