Trump Wins Bigly After Classified Docs Trial Postponed Indefinitely
Presumptive GOP Presidential nominee Donald Trump notched another legal victory Tuesday after a federal judge ordered that his classified documents trial be postponed indefinitely. The trial had been expected to start May 20 but was pushed back following a new filing by Judge Aileen Cannon of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
In the filing Tuesday, Cannon stated that it would be inappropriate to begin the trial while the “myriad and interconnected pre-trial” issues were still “remaining and forthcoming,”
“…finalization of a trial date at this juncture … would be imprudent and inconsistent with the Court’s duty to fully and fairly consider the various pending pre-trial motions before the Court.” ~ Judge Aileen Cannon
While Cannon listed a series of pre-trial deadlines to manage “discovery and disclosure” procedures, no new date has been set for the trial. The filing is a significant win for Trump, whose legal team had been pushing to delay the trial. Cannon wrote that a new trial date would need to be set in a “separate order” following the resolution of the pre-trial matters.
“The Court, therefore, vacates the current May 20, 2024, trial date (and associated calendar call), to be reset by separate order… consistent with Defendants’ right to due process and the public’s interest in the fair and efficient administration of justice,” Cannon wrote.

Trump was charged last June following an investigation by FBI Special Counsel Jack Smith. He faces 37 felony counts stemming from the probe, which include willful retention of national defense information and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Trump has pled not guilty to all charges.
In an interview Tuesday, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said that Judge Cannon made the correct call. “This is exactly what should have happened,” Bondi said in an interview with ‘Fox & Friends First.’ “It means he’s going to receive a fair trial in at least one of the cases.”
“All the rights belong to Donald Trump. But they’re being denied to him in most of these cases.” ~ Fmr. FL Attorney General Pam Bondi
Cannon, who was appointed to the bench by Trump in 2020, has been the subject of frequent attacks from the left, including Smith and his office. Others have called on Cannon to recuse herself from the case.
Trump has accused Biden and the Special Counsel of “working overtime to try to illegally intimidate and harass” the judge.
“They want her to act like the dishonest, politically biased and conflicted judges in New York,” Trump said on Truth Social in April. “and not like the fair and impartial judge that she is.”

The new filing alleviates fears by the Trump campaign that the former President would continue to be kept off the campaign trail following his New York trial. Trump has faced difficulties campaigning due to his regular, required court appearances in Manhattan. Trump has described the proceedings as a “witch hunt” designed to impede his White House bid.
