Stanford Law Dean, Students Disrupt Trump Judge’s Speech With ‘Dogsh*t’ Protest

A Stanford law dean joined protesters on Thursday as they shouted down a Trump-appointed judge who had been invited to speak on campus. Judge Kyle Duncan was trying to talk to students when diversity, equity, and inclusion dean Tirien Steinbach seized the lectern and started scolding him. A shocking video showed the dean lecturing Duncan in a lengthy rant while protesters hurled abuse at the judge.

“For many people at the law school who work here, who study here, and who live here, your advocacy, your opinions from the bench, land as absolute disenfranchisement of their rights,” Steinbach said before accusing him of “tearing the fabric of this community.” The DEI dean read from a pre-written speech, telling students she was “so uncomfortable up here.”

The student protesters clicked their fingers in approval, having been told before that hand clapping might be offensive to some. Around 100 protesters heckled Duncan, calling him a “liar” and “scumbag.” Many of the students carried vulgar signs criticizing the judge.

“Do you have something so incredibly important to say,” Steinbach asked, “that it is worth the “division of these people?”

President Donald Trump appointed Duncan to the fifth circuit court of appeals in 2018. Stanford’s Federalist Society chapter had invited him to speak about gun laws, big tech, and the COVID mandates.

“I’m uncomfortable because this event is tearing at the fabric of this community that I care about, and I’m here to support,” Steinbach said.

“It’s uncomfortable to say this to you as a person. It’s uncomfortable to say that, for many people here, your work has caused harm… and I know that must be uncomfortable to hear. It must be… I’m also uncomfortable because many of the people in the room here I have come to care for.”

The law school dean said that Duncan’s work as a jurist was “abhorrent,” “harmful,” and “literally denies the humanity of people.”

“So, you’ve invited me to speak here, and I’ve been heckled non-stop,” Duncan said. He continued, trying to respond to the abuse, but Steinbach refused. “Is the juice worth the squeeze?” she asked.

The protesters then berated Duncan, shouting, “let her finish!” When the judge was finally allowed to address student questions, they shouted nonsense at him, asking him about rulings he had never made. One protester shouted, “I f–k men, I can find the prostate. Why can’t you find the clit?”

Federal marshals eventually escorted Duncan out the back door of the event.

According to Washington Free Beacon, the student protest was the culmination of a week-long pressure campaign against the school’s Federalist Society. Over 70 students reportedly contacted the group, demanding they cancel the event.

“Don’t feel sorry for me,” Duncan told Free Beacon. “I’m a life-tenured federal judge. What outrages me is that these kids are being treated like dogsh-t by fellow students and administrators.”

On Friday, Stanford Law School Dean Jenny Martinez issued a statement that the event was “not aligned with [Stanford’s] institutional commitment to freedom of speech.” Martinez said that the school is “reviewing” the events but did not say if Steinbach or any students would face punishment.
