‘Selfish’ Kamala Attacks DeSantis Amid Hurricane Prep

Governor Ron DeSantis pushed back Monday evening against Vice President Kamala Harris’s claims that he was “playing political games” by refusing her call amid preparations for Hurricane Milton. During an interview on ‘Hannity,’ DeSantis denied ever receiving a call from her but pointed out that he had already been in contact with President Joe Biden days prior. DeSantis accused Harris of trying to “blunder” her way into the state’s storm preparation to boost her Presidential campaign, pointing out that she had never previously engaged with Florida’s recovery efforts.

“I’ve been in touch with both FEMA and the president, as well as marshaling all our state agencies and working to support our local communities,” DeSantis told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

“She has no role in this. In fact, she’s been vice president for three and a half years. I’ve dealt with a number of storms under this administration. She has never contributed anything to any of these efforts, and so what I think is selfish is trying to blunder into this.”

Milton strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane this week, reaching sustained winds of 180mph. The National Hurricane Service has warned of a “potentially catastrophic” impact as it heads towards Florida.

While Florida braces for impact, Harris took an opportunity Monday to attack DeSantis while speaking to reporters. The Vice President claimed that DeSantis had been “utterly irresponsible” by refusing a phone call with her–a claim later disputed by the Governor.

“People are in desperate need of support right now, and playing political games at this moment in these crisis situations…is just utterly irresponsible, and it is selfish,” Harris told reporters.

“It is about political gamesmanship, instead of doing the job that you took an oath to do, which is to put the people first.”

During a press conference later that day, DeSantis said he “didn’t know that she had called.”

I’m not sure who they called. They didn’t call me,” he said. “It wasn’t anything that anybody in my office did, in terms of saying it was political.”

After another reporter asked again, DeSantis repeated, “I didn’t know that she had called.”

Florida officials are urging residents in affected areas to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall. On Monday, DeSantis announced that tolls had been suspended and road shoulders opened up to make travel easier for evacuees. The governor also urged residents to seek shelter in their county if need be, stating, “Every county has pet-friendly shelters, special needs shelters, and other options that are safe from storm surge.”

“The State of Florida continues to fulfill requests from communities in the potential path of Hurricane Milton as we prepare for landfall. Hundreds of first responders will be embedded in potential impact sites along Florida’s west coast to begin search and rescue operations as soon as the storm passes. Power restoration resources are being marshaled in advance of this storm, including 30,000 linemen who are coming to Florida from all over the country.” ~ Gov. Ron DeSantis
