NYC Homeless System Hits Limit, Busses Migrants to Republican County

The Adams administration resorted Friday to busing migrants to the upstate republican Rockland County, just hours after being forced to repurpose a Manhattan gym into a temporary shelter, saying the city’s shelter system has hit its “limit.”

New York Mayor Adams grew desperate enough to make the call Friday. City Hall acknowledged it had leased space in two upstate hotels to house single homeless adults who recently arrived in the five boroughs. Officials described the program as “voluntary” and a method to reduce the strain on the Big Apple’s social service apparatus.

Adams defended the decision as the “compassionate” response.

“This new, voluntary program will provide asylum seekers with temporary housing, access to services, and connections to local communities as they build a stable life in New York state. New York City continues to step up and handle this crisis, and this new program is an extension of our compassionate response.”

Rockland County officials, however, were not happy with this move or how it was executed. Republican County Executive Ed Day claimed authorities in Orangeburg were not notified that 340 adult male migrants were coming until Friday morning, the same day the decision was made, and ripped Mayor Adams as “duplicitous.”

Day told the New York Post that Adams could not handle the consequences of his own policies and was now shifting the burden elsewhere.

“I find it remarkable that the mayor of New York, who declared New York City a sanctuary city, now admits he’s bit off more than he can chew. Rockland County is not prepared to handle this.”

Congressman Mike Lawler also condemned Adam’s action, reiterating that Rockland could not handle the extra burden of Adams’ policies.

“This is not a partisan issue. There is a real strain on food banks, shelters, and our non-profits … already and these additional arrivals may send them under.”

This is not just rhetoric. Rockland has declared a state of emergency over the sudden injection of migrants as a direct rebuttal to Adams’ plan, and Day released another statement alongside this announcement.

“This county already has a housing crisis due to the lack thereof and lack of affordable housing options. This crisis is so extreme that Rockland has been unprecedently deputized by the State of New York to take over Building and Fire Code enforcement in the Village of Spring Valley…..“sending busloads of people to this county that does not have the infrastructure to care for them will only compound that issue tenfold, while straining support systems that are already at a breaking point.”

Nevertheless, Rockland plans to put up the 340 migrant men at the Armoni Inn and Suites in Orangeburg for four months while they get work permits and integrate into the community. The migrants will likely arrive sometime over the weekend or on Monday.
