New York Dems Ban Gas Stoves After Calling Idea a Conspiracy Theory

Just months after Democrats dismissed a gas stove ban as a baseless conspiracy theory from Republicans, New York will be moving forward as the first state in the country to ban the fossil-fueled cookware. The provision was included in the state’s new budget, which passed late Tuesday evening with the support of the legislature’s Democrat supermajority. The new law bans all gas-powered stoves, furnaces, and propane heating and will require all-electric heating in new buildings by 2026 or 2029, depending on the building height, with limited exceptions.

Climate activists have heralded the move as a triumph, even though gas stoves account for less than 0.1 percent of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

The gas stove battle first ignited in January after Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) chief and Biden appointee Richard Trumka Jr. said his agency would move to regulate gas appliances in an interview with Bloomberg News before adding that,

“Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”

In that same interview, Trumka referred to gas stoves as a “hidden hazard.”

The immediate and immense backlash from conservatives forced the CPSC to backpedal on their comments, with agency chairman Alexander Hoehn-Saric commenting later that week,

“Research indicates that emissions from gas stoves can be hazardous, but I am not looking to ban gas stoves, and the CPSC has no proceeding to do so.”

Even the White House attempted to distance itself from the controversy, with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre telling reporters in January that “the President does not support banning gas stoves.”

Governor Ron DeSantis ripped the idea of a gas stove ban shortly after Trumka’s interview, declaring at a press conference that “you’re not taking gas stoves away from us” about the federal government.

“When we say don’t tread on Florida or let us alone, we mean that, including on your gas stoves! You’re not taking our gas stoves away from us. That’s your choice! I know many people who cook a lot who do not want to part with their gas stove

And now the narrative machine is like ‘Oh, why are these conservatives talking about gas stoves! They’re trying to stoke issues.’ No. You were trying to do it and we’re fighting back. The bottom line is anything they can get away with, they’re going to get away with. And this is just a perfect example of that.”

Despite the initial comments from the CPSC, Democrats widely dismissed Republicans’ concerns as a wild conspiracy theory. In particular, New Yorkers Chuck Schumer and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mocked conservatives, calling the backlash a “distraction.”

“Nobody is taking away your gas stove,” Schumer boldly declared in a February Tweet.

“Shameless and desperate MAGA Republicans are showing us they will cook up any distraction to divert from real issues the American people want solved, like the debt ceiling.”

Ocasio-Cortez went as far as to suggest that gas stove usage was affecting the “cognitive performance” of Republicans.

Lo and behold, their state will be the first to implement a gas stove ban.
