Liberal Californians Blame Fentanyl Crisis on ‘Extreme Left’ With ‘Too Much Power’
In 2022, fentanyl accounted for three-quarters of the nation’s 110,000 overdose deaths. The cheap, potent, and deadly street drug kills roughly 2,000 Americans every week, and on the streets of San Francisco, lawmakers appear to be doing everything they can to pump that number up. Attempts to crack down on fentanyl distribution have been thwarted by the state’s progressive element, which prefers to fund disastrous “safe injection” sites to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. As the devastating epidemic strikes closer and closer to home for many American families, moderate Democrats are beginning to break rank with their party, calling out the “extreme left” for exacerbating the crisis.
Parents Matt and Christine Capelouto are from one such family. Their daughter, Alexandra, was 20 years old when she took what she thought was oxycodone to help her sleep. The tablet she had taken was in fact fentanyl, and she died two days before Christmas in 2019. The man who sold her the drug was sentenced to just nine years behind bars in February.
Alexandra’s Law–named for the couple’s daughter–would make it easier for the state to prosecute drug dealers, but the couple says the bill has been stalled due to the efforts of a minority of “extreme, far-left” Democrats who hold “too much power.” Matt, still reeling from the tragedy, says that California’s pro-crime, liberal lawmakers “have blood on their hands.”

According to a report by the outlet, overdose deaths in San Francisco spiked 41 percent in the first three months of the year–on top of already having one of the highest overdose rates in the country.
Instead of tackling the distribution of fentanyl and pursuing treatment options for addicts, the city’s mayor, London Breed, plans to invest another $18.5 million into opening three new “safe consumption” sites for users to keep injecting the drug under “supervision.”
This is despite the city’s previous “safe consumption” site, known as the Tenderloin Center, closing last December after less than one year in operation, sucking up a total of $12 million in costs.
Tanya Tilghman, 53, told DailyMail that visiting the center prompted her to reconsider her liberal worldview.
[W]hen she visited with a group of other mother’s, she heard music blaring and wanted a look inside. She returned, posing as an addict, and told workers at the center she needed help to get off drugs. ‘They laughed at me,’ she said. ‘They told me they could help me to do drugs if I had my own.’
‘I went inside and there was loud music. I could see people shooting up, smoking from pipes. I saw people who were on the ground who looked like they were passed out. Staff didn’t seem to care. I stayed there for a good 30 to 40 minutes, just to see if anyone was going to check on the people who were lying on the ground. Nobody was checking on them.’
Tilghman’s own son has battled drug addiction since he was a teenager. “If I would have brought my son there, there’s no way he would have wanted to get help,” she told the outlet.
