Florida Republicans Urge ‘Unfit’ Biden to Resign
President Joe Biden’s decision to end his re-election bid may have satisfied critics in his own party, but across the aisle, calls are mounting for the 81-year-old to resign from office.
“Let me be clear, if Joe Biden can’t run for re-election, he is not capable of serving as president for the next six months and needs to resign today,” U.S. Senator Rick Scott posted to X Sunday. “While we welcome the news that one of America’s most destructive presidents will be denied a second term, it changes very little as to the stakes of this election.”
Scott is one of many Florida lawmakers now calling on Biden to vacate the oval office, just six months before his term is due to expire.
Biden’s decision Sunday to suspend his Presidential campaign came after nearly a month of pressure from within his own party, following his disastrous performance in the June Presidential debate against Donald Trump. Concerns over Biden’s advanced age and cognitive decline have dominated headlines for much of the election cycle, culminating in the President’s ultimate decision to the withdraw his bid.

What a farce. If Biden is incapable of campaigning, how can he say he’s capable of fulfilling his duties as President? pic.twitter.com/yVxWNsfhfC

But if Biden is unfit to run for re-election, Republicans argue, then what standing does he have to continue serving as President?
“Biden is… Unfit to stand trial. Unfit to run. Unfit to be president for 1 more second.” Congressman Brian Mast (R-FL) wrote on X.
“If President Biden isn’t fit to run for re-election, he isn’t fit to continue as commander-in-chief. He should resign,” Congressman Michael Waltz (R-FL) posted, echoing his colleagues’ sentiments.
Top GOP leaders in Florida have described the political episode as a “coverup,” in which Vice President Kamala Harris played a major role.
“Kamala Harris was complicit in a massive coverup to hide and deny the fact that Joe Biden was not capable of discharging the duties of the office,” Governor Ron DeSantis posted to social media.
“She also was the the border czar during the worst border crisis in American history. Democrats are just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.” ~ Gov. Ron DeSantis
“Joe Biden’s announcement confirms what we’ve been saying for years: Democrat leadership has failed Americans by propping up someone unfit to do the job,” Florida GOP Chair Evan Power wrote in an official statement. “Every Democrat party leader, especially Vice President Harris, is complicit in this sham presidency and voters will hold them accountable this November.”

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried, however, is already eulogizing Biden as “one of the greatest presidents of our lifetimes.”
“The nation is eternally grateful,” Fried said in a statement. “Now, the Democratic Party must be more united than ever to defeat Donald Trump.”
Notably, the Florida Democrats were one of two state parties to cancel their 2024 primaries in favor of supporting Biden — the other being in Biden’s home state of Delaware. The decision was widely criticized by Democratic voters for affecting turnout during the municipal elections last March.
