DeSantis: No More ‘Weekend at Bernie’s Presidency’

Governor Ron DeSantis received a warm reception at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday after declaring that America does not need another “Weekend at Bernie’s presidency” under Joe Biden. Once an opponent of former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary, DeSantis featured prominently on the convention’s second night. Putting old rivalries in the past, he dedicated his speech to attacking the Biden administration and championing Donald Trump’s re-election.

“Life was more affordable when Donald Trump was president,” DeSantis told a cheering audience. “Our border was safer under the Trump administration, and our country was respected when Donald Trump was our commander-in-chief.” Turning his attention to the current White House, however, DeSantis said that Biden “has failed this nation.”

“Our enemies do not confine their designs to between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. We need a commander-in-chief who can lead 24 hours a day and seven days a week. America cannot afford four more years of a Weekend at Bernie’s presidency.”

DeSantis criticized Biden over his lack of stamina, referencing a report from White House sources claiming that Biden has an ‘active’ daily window of just six hours. He compared the President’s cognitive decline to the 1989 comedy film Weekend at Bernie’s, in which two employees desperately try to pretend their boss is alive. The Florida Governor’s comments elicited a laugh from Trump in the audience.

“Donald Trump has been demonized. He’s been sued. He’s been prosecuted, and he nearly lost his life,” DeSantis said. “We cannot let him down. And we cannot let America down.”

“We believe schools should educate, not indoctrinate. We stand for parents’ rights, including universal school choice. We support law and order, not rioting and disorder. We seek a strong, focused United States military, not one distracted by a social agenda. We reject entrenched political class, and we demand term limits for members of Congress. We stand for fiscal sanity, for low taxes, and for reduced debt. We seek to reclaim the constitutional government as envisioned by our Founding Fathers, by bringing the administrative state to heel once and for all.” ~ Gov. Ron DeSantis

DeSantis was one of several former primary opponents of Trump who spoke during day two of the convention. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy also addressed the crowd. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), another former primary opponent, spoke on the convention’s first day.

Following the 2024 GOP primary, DeSantis and Trump remained cold toward one another, with their camps occasionally exchanging jabs. However, relations between the two have reportedly thawed, with DeSantis actively supporting the Trump campaign.

“We stand for strong borders and believe that our nation must have a shared civic culture, and we oppose any immigration that stands apart or in contrast to our American values,” DeSantis told the audience. “We believe in the principles articulated in the Declaration of Independence that our rights come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of the Almighty, including the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
