Trump Roasts Absent Kamala at Al Smith Dinner
Former President Donald Trump showed off his comedy chops at the Al Smith Memorial Dinner on Thursday, taking shots at several top Democrats and roasting opponent Kamala Harris for skipping the bipartisan event. Harris is the first Presidential nominee to skip the dinner in forty years, instead choosing to submit a pre-recorded video.
The Al Smith Dinner is a white-tie Catholic charity banquet hosted in New York City. Attendees include New York Attorney General Letitia James, New York City Mayors Eric Adams, Bill de Blasio, Michael Bloomberg, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
“It is a true pleasure to be with you this evening… and these days, it’s really a pleasure anywhere in New York without a subpoena for my appearance,” Trump joked to the audience.
“My opponent feels like she does not have to be here, which is deeply disrespectful to the event, and in particular to our great Catholic community. Very disrespectful,” he continued, taking a shot at Harris. The Vice President had reportedly chosen to campaign in Wisconsin instead.
“If you really wanted Vice President Harris to accept your invitation, I guess you should have told her the funds were going to bail out the looters and rioters in Minneapolis, and she would have been here…
The fact is, we need new leadership in this country. Right now we have someone in the White House who can barely talk, barely put together two coherent sentences, who seems to have the mental faculties of a child. There’s a person that has nothing going. No intelligence whatsoever.”

“But enough about Kamala Harris,” Trump said before turning his attention to some of the dinner’s Democratic attendees. He started with a jab at the advocacy group “White Dudes for Harris.”
“There’s a group called White Dudes for Harris. But I’m not worried about them,” Trump said. “Their wives and their wives’ lovers are all voting for me.” Some Republican audience members, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, laughed at the jokes. But some of the roasts received a mixed reception from Democrats.
“But look on the bright side, Chuck,” Trump continued, referring to Senator Schumer. “Considering how woke your party has become, if Kamala loses, you still have a chance to become the first woman president.”
Taking a swipe at President Joe Biden, Trump said, “Joe has almost disappeared from view. The only way he could be seen less is if he had a show on CNN.”
Trump also took a shot at Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz.
“I used to think the Democrats were crazy for saying that men have periods, but then I met Tim Walz.”

Comedian Jim Gaffigan emceed the dinner and didn’t hold back with his own jabs against Harris.
“We are very sorry that Vice President Harris cannot make it here in person,” Gaffigan said as the audience booed the Vice President.
“She did find time to appear on The View, Howard Stern, Colbert — and the longtime staple of campaigning, the Call Her Daddy podcast…” he added, referring to the sex podcast Harris appeared on earlier this month.
Harris was the first Presidential nominee to skip the dinner since Walter Mondale in 1984.
“Shows there is a God,” Trump quipped about Mondale’s results.
