Trump May Go to Tallahassee to Scuttle Lawmakers Clearing Path For DeSantis 2024
Florida lawmakers are poised to amend the state’s “resign to run” law on Wednesday, which would effectively clear the way for Governor Ron DeSantis to launch a 2024 White House bid. Senate Republicans introduced the amendment on Tuesday, which aims to allow Florida officeholders to run for president or vice president without having to give up their current position. It is expected to pass the legislature with overwhelming support, despite a possible challenge from Former President Donald Trump, who is reportedly considering a trip to Tallahassee in a last-ditch effort to forestall the bill and prevent a primary challenge. DeSantis is traveling abroad at the helm of a trade mission to Asia.
The proposed change to Florida law has been widely anticipated for months, as DeSantis has frequently teased a possible presidential bid in the middle of his second term as governor. With the clock ticking on the state legislative session, which is scheduled to end on May 5, the amendment will finally receive a vote with just over a week remaining. The move serves as additional evidence of an impending DeSantis 2024 run, which the Governor says he will address after the session’s conclusion.
The amendment will be voted on as part of a larger elections bill, which is expected to arrive on the governor’s desk and receive his signature by next week.

The amendment was filed by Sen. Travis Hutson (R-St. Augustine) to “clarify existing law.” In an interview with NBC News, Hutson described his motivation as clarifying to DeSantis that “he can be back” regardless of a presidential run.
“I am a bit biased because I think Gov. DeSantis has done such a good job, so I just want to make clear that if he is not the Republican nominee [for president] he can be back.”
Not everyone is thrilled about the rule change, however, as numerous Trump allies have floated the idea of the Former President taking a trip to Tallahassee in a bid to stop the bill. According to Peter Schorsch of Florida Politics, “increasing chatter” from Trumpworld on Tuesday indicated that the “ultimate showman” might fly out to the State Capitol in an apparent bid to upstage the Governor.
“With [Gov. Ron DeSantis] traveling abroad during the penultimate week of the 2023 Florida Legislative Session, there is increasing chatter that [Donald Trump], the ultimate showman, will visit Tallahassee to meet w/ lawmakers. [Sen. Joe Gruters] would shepherd former POTUS.”

DeSantis is set to return to Florida following international stops in Japan, South Korea, Israel, and the United Kingdom. Upon his return, he will face an increasingly divided political landscape as lawmakers continue to roll out endorsements ahead of the expected showdown between the two Florida Republican titans.
When asked by a Japanese reporter with Nikkei this week about a possible presidential run, DeSantis responded,
“I got reelected in November. We had a big landslide win, a lot of speculation. People have been asking me to run, and they had been doing that before, but it kind of ramped up.”
“If I did that in Tokyo, people would probably say, ‘Why didn’t you do it in Florida?'”
DeSantis added that he would make “no announcements prior to the end of the legislative session” on May 5.
