Trump-Backed Candidates Sweep Primary Races

Former President Donald Trump had a successful night Tuesday, with his coveted endorsement propelling several GOP candidates to first place in their primary elections. All Trump-backed candidates finished first in their races, which included U.S. Senate, House, and gubernatorial primaries in South Carolina, Nevada, Maine, and North Dakota.

In Nevada, army veteran Sam Brown handily won the Republican nomination for the Senate. He was helped by a late Sunday endorsement from Trump over his opponent Jeffrey Gunter, the former U.S. Ambassador to Iceland. Brown will be at the center of a fierce election this November, with the state expected to be a top battleground in both the Presidential and U.S. Senate races. He will go on to face incumbent Democratic Senator Jacky Rosen.

While minimal polling has been conducted on the upcoming race, one poll released by the New York Times in May showed Brown and Rosen tied at 41 percent for the Senate seat. Democrats hold a slim majority in the Senate at 51 to 49.

In South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, U.S. Rep Nancy Mace coasted to victory–despite a serious primary effort backed by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Mace, a longtime critic of Trump, recently made an ally of the former President going into the primary election. With Trump’s support, Mace beat opponents Catherine Templeton and Bill Young by roughly 30 points.

Mace was among the first to support McCarthy’s ouster from the House speakership last year. She is one of the first targets of McCarthy’s so-called ‘revenge tour,’ as the embittered former Congressman seeks to unseat the eight Republicans who voted against him. McCarthy’s political action committee contributed $10,000 to Templeton, while the American Prosperity Alliance, where McCarthy serves as a senior adviser, contributed to the anti-Mace South Carolina Patriots (SCP) PAC. The SCP spent more than $2.1 million in the election.

In her victory speech, Mace thanked voters for tuning out the “senseless noise” from her opponents.

“When you are the first woman to sit in The Citadel [military college] ‘s barber chair to get all of your hair chopped off, you don’t get your feelings hurt when you don’t get invited to the fancy cocktail parties in Washington, D.C.,” Mace said.

“While sometimes I may be a caucus of one, I’m not alone because I’m not there for me — I’m there for each and every one of you.”

Also in South Carolina, Trump-backed candidate Rep. William Timmons claimed a narrow victory over opponent Adam Morgan in the 4th Congressional District. According to a report by POLITICO, Timmons received more than $1 million in support from Trump-aligned groups.

Trump-backed candidate Pastor Mark Burns won first place in South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District but did not receive a majority of the votes. The district will hold a runoff election between him and nurse Sheri Briggs to determine the party’s nominee.

In Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, former NASCAR driver Austin Theriault won out over fellow state representative Mike Soboleski. Theriault received support from both Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson. He will face Democratic Rep. Jared Golden in a district that previously swung for Trump in 2020.

Trump endorsed Rep. Kelly Armstrong, who also netted a victory in North Dakota, where she clinched the nomination to be the state’s next governor. Kelly beat Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller for the nomination, who current Gov. Doug Burgum had endorsed. Burgum has recently been floated as a possible VP pick for Donald Trump.
