Randi Weingarten Accuses DeSantis of Arresting Political Opponents, Immediately Fact Checked

The American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten was fact-checked for falsely claiming that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is arresting his political opponents.

Florida Planned Parenthood Action wrote the original tweet, the Twitter account for the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates and Florida Planned Parenthood PAC., which claims in its bio that it defends “reproductive health care including abortion!”

The tweet comments on a video of Tallahassee police removing individuals from City Hall after regular business hours.

Those detained included the likes of Nikki Fried, the new Florida DNC chair.

“BREAKING: Tallahassee Police Department just arrested dozens of peaceful pro-choice protestors at City Hall outside of the Florida Capitol. This includes Senator @LeaderBookFL and FDP Chair @NikkiFriedFL. Abortion is health care.”

Randi Weingarten retweeted the video, claiming it was evidence of DeSantis arresting opposition.

“Now DeSantis is arresting [h]is opponents”

However, fact-checkers on Twitter’s Community Notes page quickly pointed out why that wasn’t true. It read that the protestors were trespassing and that their removal had nothing to do with why they were there.

Another user pointed out that DeSantis was not involved with the actions of this local police at all, and it’s Democrats in charge of the Tallahassee police force.

The City of Tallahassee even put out an official statement explaining why the group had been asked to leave: the size of the group seeking to stay overnight.

“Today TPD assisted in ensuring a safe environment for demonstrators from across the state as they peacefully protested Senate Bill 300 in front of City Hall, located across from the Florida Capitol. The City had been working with protest organizers for over a week; however, due to the size of the crowd they were expecting and their desire for overnight camping, they were informed last Friday of the City’s inability to accommodate them. Upon the group’s arrival to City Hall today, they were allowed to utilize the property during normal operating hours.”

The statement elaborates on what happened when the city was forced to make due on their word.

After multiple warnings throughout the day, protestors acknowledged they understood that anyone refusing to leave the premises at sundown would be subject to arrest. This evening, after sunset, the majority of the crowd left the property while 11 people refused to leave despite numerous requests. They were subsequently arrested for trespass after warning. TPD encourages individuals exercising their First Amendment right of peaceful assembly to do so in accordance with the law. TPD supports non-disruptive demonstrations and works diligently to protect and uphold the rights of citizens every day.

However, none of this, Florida Planned Parenthood Action from tweeting several videos of police arresting the protesters, telling readers to call Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey’s office “and tell him you are disgusted by the arrest of peaceful protesters.”

Weingarten has repeatedly slammed DeSantis but has kept to her policy of not allowing replies to her tweets, meaning the fact-checks will continue to be indirect.
