Love Story – JFK  Jr., Carolyn  Bessette, & the ‘90s Resurgence

Ryan  Murphy’s latest series, Love Story, brings them back to JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, in all their tragic beauty. The creator behind The People v. O.J. Simpson, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Feud, and American Horror Story knows precisely how to explore the shadows behind celebrity. For those who remember, July  1999 feels like yesterday. For Gen  Z, it’s a history lesson about people they’ve never heard of, until now.

Ryan Murphy’s “Love Story” is now streaming on Hulu

For those of you who need a refresher, John  F.  Kennedy  Jr. was born into America’s royal family — the son of President  John  F.  Kennedy and First  Lady  Jacqueline  Bouvier  Kennedy  Onassis. When his father was assassinated in 1963, little John‑John, only three years old, stepped forward outside St. Matthew’s Cathedral and gave a solemn salute to the casket — a photograph seared into the nation’s heart. It captured the end of innocence and the burden of a legacy no child could escape.

As an adult, John Jr. carried on his father’s legacy with charm and modern ease. A lawyer, magazine founder, and New York golden boy, he embodied grace without pretense. “America’s Prince,” they called him.

JFK Jr. had dated many women, including celebrities such as Daryl Hannah, who starred in popular 80s movies such as Wall Street and Splash. Zoomers, watch the movies. It will give you something to talk about with your parents or, gulp, grandparents.

Then came Carolyn  Bessette — the Calvin  Klein publicist with long blonde hair and unshakable poise. She wasn’t a celebrity, and she wasn’t in politics; she was fashion. She embodied quiet luxury before the term entered the modern lexicon. Her minimalist style, barely‑there makeup, and subtle confidence made her a 1990s original. Together, they embodied rare symmetry: pedigree and modernity. They married in 1996 in a candlelit ceremony, deliberately far from the press that followed them everywhere, before smartphones, selfies, and social media.

But fate isn’t generous to Kennedys. In July 1999, John piloted a small plane carrying Carolyn and her sister Lauren toward Massachusetts for a family wedding. The aircraft disappeared off Martha’s Vineyard. All three were lost. Once again, a Kennedy tragedy unfolded in front of a mourning nation. People spoke of the Kennedy curse, that eerie line of misfortune that seems to be following the family to this day.

John was 38, Carolyn just 33. Their story froze in time — youth, glamour, and promise suspended midair. They became the final flicker of a pre‑digital age, when privacy was possible, and mystery was part of allure.

A Fashion Icon’s Enduring Allure

Carolyn  Bessette wasn’t just JFK  Jr.’s wife — she was the ‘90s style blueprint. Her sleek Calvin  Klein wardrobes and effortless minimalism made her a muse when excess ruled. Women copied her jeans, loafers, chic, black Prada clothing, and pulled‑back hair. That Birkin bag you see everywhere these days, she carried it everywhere. Decades later, her influence thrives online through Instagram, Pinterest boards, and TikTok hashtags — “Carolyncore” lives on.

Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials are still fascinated by this story and its brand of chic minimalism, which still resonates today. It’s a nostalgic memory from a time when we had far less access to celebrities’ lives, and most of what we thought we knew about them came from our own imaginations. Love Story revives the couple’s mystique for new generations that never knew them, or heard of them — a reminder that true glamour isn’t about followers or filters.

“LoveStory” premiered on February 5,2026, on Hulu.
