FL Congressman Files for Impeachment of Secret Service Director

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) announced Monday afternoon that he filed an impeachment resolution against Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. The Congressman said in a press release that he was motivated to take action following Cheatle’s “abysmal” testimony before the House Oversight Committee, “where little to no questions were properly answered, and she doubled down on her refusal to resign.”

“The Secret Service calls themselves ‘one of the most elite law enforcement agencies in the world,'” Steube wrote. “What happened under their watch in Butler, Pennsylvania, was an international embarrassment and an inexcusable tragedy.”

The Bradenton Republican referred to recent reports indicating that the Secret Service had been alerted to suspicious activity nearly 20 minutes before Thomas Crooks opened fire. Questions have swirled since the July 13 attack as to how the would-be assassin was able to get so close to former President Donald Trump. During her testimony, Cheatle admitted that the shooting was a “failure” by the agency.

“Every supervisor in that chain of command should be fired immediately, and that starts with the Director,” the Congressman said.

“Multiple confirmed reports show that the Secret Service Sniper had the would-be assassin in his sights for almost 20 minutes… How was the would-be assassin not neutralized before he shot?  An American hero is dead and several severely wounded as a result of the Secret Service failure to protect President Trump. There are also multiple reports that Trump’s detail had repeatedly requested additional resources for safety and were denied. All in the chain of command including the Director should be held responsible.”

“We have no choice but to impeach Director Cheatle,” concluded Steube.

His resolution includes one article of impeachment against Cheatle for “dereliction of duty.” The article accuses the Secret Service director of “neglect” for protecting the former President. It also criticizes Cheatle for introducing gender diversity quotas to the department’s hiring practices, which it says has turned the agency’s focus away from serving protectees.

Shortly after Steube filed the resolution, fellow Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) appeared on Newsmax to call for a full Congressional investigation of the shooting. “What we need to do, in my view, is that you need to have Congress investigate this matter. And that way, we get to the bottom of it,” Donalds said in an interview with ‘Prime News.’

“We’ve seen this dance before where an agency says we did our own internal review, and [they] ‘took care of things.’ To me, that’s simply not good enough.”

“That’s why I know that the FBI is looking at the actual scene. They’re supposed to be doing their own independent evaluation. I say no to any of that. I think it’s important right now. And it really could be [the] House and Senate. It doesn’t have to just be the House because this is a serious matter,”

Cheatle’s testimony has sparked bipartisan outrage, with some Democrats joining calls for her resignation. Ranking Oversight Committee member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) signed a letter Monday calling for Cheatle to step down.
