Disney CEO Bob Iger Promises Disney Expansion as Revenge Against DeSantis
The Walt Disney Co. plans to invest $17 billion in Walt Disney World over the next ten years as an act of revenge on Governor Ron DeSantis, who, ironically, Iger felt had a vindictive response during the two’s struggle over the Parental Rights in Education Act.
Iger made his remarks in response to an audience question during Disney’s annual shareholder meeting in California over what steps Disney will take to protect shareholders in an anticipated legal battle with DeSantis and the Florida Government.

It’s a reasonable question; Disney’s public feud with the Sunshine State Governor and their new political and cultural priorities has had severe costs, laying off several thousand employees. Iger’s response was a plan to expand Disney World further and framed any opposition to the move as “anti-business” and “anti-Florida.”
“Our point on this is that any action that thwarts those efforts, simply to retaliate for a position the company took, sounds not just anti-business, but it sounds anti-Florida, and I’ll just leave it at that,”
While Iger’s gall to equate his theme park expansion plans to the entire state’s interests is undoubtedly jarring, he didn’t have details on what the expansion would look like. He only said that more tourism meant more tax dollars for Florida, with his other comments implying that tax dollars are all that matter.
Iger and DeSantis have been trading blows ever since the House of Mouse attacked the Parental Rights in Education Act, which protected children from non-age-appropriate material around sex and gender.
DeSantis argued that Disney’s long-held tax-exempt status was a bad policy that needed to end. While Disney’s public attacks on its home state may have provided the PR climate that sparked the move, the policy was terrible regardless.
“Allowing a corporation to control its own government is bad policy, especially when the corporation makes decisions that impact an entire region,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “This legislation ends Disney’s self-governing status, makes Disney live under the same laws as everybody else, and ensures that Disney pays its debts and fair share of taxes.”
Iger, however, complained that Disney’s loss of special privileges constituted a first amendment right violation. However, according to the Orlando Sentinel, the Disney CEO also admitted that the company’s relationship with Florida has always been “kind of been a two-way street” of goodwill. The goodwill that Disney violated first.’

But that didn’t stop Iger from sticking to his guns on the Monday meeting, justifying his attacks on the Florida legislation and claiming it was harmful to his employees.
“In almost all cases, it has to be because it directly affects our business or our people,” Iger said. “And I think if you look back for decades, corporate America has expressed themselves on numerous issues of both right and wrong, and our country, I think, is better off for that.”
Iger also claimed to “strive to do what I think is best for our business” and employees. But, simultaneously, he continues to justify and pursue the path that is bleeding the company’s funds and is forcing significant employee cuts and other shake-ups.
When confronted about this commitment to an ideological direction, Iger downplayed the concerns as merely what people “perceive to be agenda-driven content” while also defending that same agenda using vague, positive-sounding platitudes. According to Iger, there is no agenda, but the agenda is good.
“… We’re committed to delivering age-appropriate content for family audiences while also telling stories that reflect the world around us and that foster a greater understanding, greater perspective, greater acceptance of all people.”
