Dem. Elected Official Compares Muslims to White Supremacists for Protecting Children

Recently elected Democratic Maryland city council member and former public school teacher Kristin Mink came out against white women having leadership roles, serving as the most recent example of a pattern of racial essentialism.

Mink was elected to the Montgomery County Council in December, representing District 5.

At a Tuesday evening school board meeting, Mink claimed that Muslim children who spoke out against an LGBTQ+ curriculum in school were “on the same side… as White supremacists,” declaring that “this is equity.”

“This issue has, unfortunately, it does put… some Muslim families on the same side of an issue as White supremacists and outright bigots. I would not put you in the same category as those folks, although, you know, it’s complicated because they’re falling on the same side of this particular issue.”

Mink claimed that allowing kids to opt out of the readings actively harms the LGBTQIA+ community and should be mandatory, even if in direct opposition to religious values.

“You cannot say that this is a particular demographic of people who when they appear in books we now allow some student and families to say ‘we’re not going to read those books.’ There’s no way to do that without sending a clear message to the LGBTQIA+ community that you are seen as different, as other, and other people don’t need to learn about your distance or have you included in the curriculum.”

Her statements came against dueling protests outside the building, between religious Americans chanting “protect our kids” and counter-protestors insisting on “secular schools.” The implication is that schools’ secularism must even overrule individuals opting out.

This is something some members of the community call intolerance for people of faith and their values.

Nevertheless, Mink continued to rail against opt-out options.

This is not Mink’s first example of wild cultural leftism. In a 2019 email to her former colleagues at a pro-immigration organization known as Lights for Liberty, Mink expressed that she was resigning due to too many white people being involved in leadership. In describing her negative experience, Mink claimed she witnessed a “tale of White feminism,” incentivizing her to leave.

“This is very difficult for me to write… I am also not OK with the state of our organization… I would be more than glad to come back on board if Black and Brown voices are given a seat at the executive table….Having…White women representing us is going to add to the credibility issue, and doesn’t elevate the right voices,” she wrote.

Mink also expressed her displeasure at too many white people involved in speaker line-ups.

“Speaker line-ups need to be… intersectional and multi-racial. White people… should be few and with good reason,” she wrote.
