CashApp Founder Stabbed to Death on San Francisco Street

Tech executive Bob Lee, who founded CashApp and assisted in the creation of Android, was fatally stabbed on Tuesday while walking a San Francisco street. City police responded to a 911 call during the early morning hours and discovered the injured tech mogul lying on the pavement. He was transported to the hospital, where he died of his injuries. Business leaders and friends of Lee weighed in following the tragic announcement and called attention to the city’s rising crime rates.

“Our dear friend and colleague, Bob Lee passed away yesterday at the age of 43, survived by a loving family and collection of close friends and collaborators,” MobileCoin CEO Josh Goldbard said in a statement to the Associated Press. Lee had been the chief product officer of the cryptocurrency company at the time of his death.

Goldbard wrote that Lee was “made for the new world,”

“From large contributions to Android at Google, to being the first CTO of Square, in that time creating CashApp, and working with us here at Mobilecoin, Bob surely had an impact that will last far beyond his short time on earth.”

Hours before news broke of Lee’s murder, one of the tech executive’s friends, Jake Shields, wrote on Twitter,

“I just found out my good friend was killed last night while walking him in San Francisco He was in the ‘good’ part of the city and appeared to have been targeted in a random mugging/attack Fuck San Francisco.”

Shields later wrote that he “didn’t want to be the one to leak the name” since Lee was an “extremely high profile tech guy,” but said that he hoped his friend’s death would “at least bring attention to these problems.”

Fellow entrepreneur Elon Musk weighed in, saying to Shields, “very sorry to hear that. Many people I know have been severely assaulted.”

The Twitter CEO also called attention to San Francisco’s worsening crime epidemic and called out District Attorney Brooke Jenkins directly.

“Violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately. Is the city taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat violent offenders [Brooke Jenkins]?”

Lee, who went by “Crazy Bob” on his social media, had tweeted in response to a friend just last month,

“I’ll be in SF this weekend. How are you not in Miami yet?”

Other friends of the tech executive offered their condolences online.

“Bob was a dad, the former CTO of Square, where he created Cash App & CTO of Mobile Coin. He was a generous decent human being who didn’t deserve to be killed,” said Bill Barhydt, CEO of Abra Global

“It’s real. Getting calls. Heartbreaking,” Former colleague Jack Dorsey said. “Bob was instrumental to Square and Cash App. STL guy.”

According to police, a murder suspect has not yet been identified. San Francisco Public Information Officer Niccole Pacchetti stated,

“This is an open and active investigation. For that reason we are not releasing further information… We will provide further details when they become available.”
