Bob Rubin: Florida Leads the Nation by Killing DEI

As a Florida resident and taxpayer, I could not be prouder of the direction our state continues to take. Once again, Florida’s leaders are proving that common sense governance still exists and that taxpayers deserve a government focused on results, not ideology.

The Florida House recently passed legislation sponsored by State Representative Dean Black that would prohibit local governments from funding or promoting so-called Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The bill, which passed by a strong 77–37 vote, now heads to Governor Ron DeSantis.

For many of us who live and pay taxes here, this moment feels like a victory lap for Florida’s leadership.

Across the country, taxpayers have watched as local governments and public institutions drift away from their core responsibilities. Instead of focusing on safe communities, reliable infrastructure, and responsible budgeting, many governments have invested significant time and money in DEI bureaucracies that often create division rather than unity.

Florida is choosing a different path.

DEI programs have often become expensive administrative structures that prioritize political agendas over practical governance. New offices are created, consultants are hired, and mandatory training are implemented. Meanwhile, the taxpayers footing the bill see little benefit in return.

That is why this legislation matters. It sends a clear message that taxpayer dollars should be spent on services that benefit everyone, not ideological programs that categorize people based on identity politics.

Representative Black was right when he argued that DEI initiatives frequently promote resentment rather than fairness and mediocrity rather than merit. The government should treat every citizen equally under the law. It should not divide communities into competing identity groups or prioritize certain individuals over others based on race, gender, or political ideology.

Florida’s approach is refreshingly simple: the government should focus on competence, merit, and delivering real services to residents.

That philosophy has helped make Florida one of the fastest-growing and most economically dynamic states in the country. Families are moving here. Businesses are relocating here. Investors are putting capital to work here. None of that is happening by accident

It is happening because Florida has chosen to prioritize freedom, fiscal responsibility, and common sense.

At the local level, this matters enormously. Counties and municipalities should be focused on delivering the services residents depend on every day. Roads and infrastructure must be maintained. Parks and community spaces should be accessible and well-kept. Budgets must reflect the real priorities of the people who live there.

Taxpayer dollars are not unlimited, and they certainly should not be wasted on bureaucratic programs that serve political trends rather than public needs.

This legislation is about restoring focus to the government. It reminds local officials that their primary responsibility is to the residents who elected them and the taxpayers who fund their budgets.

As someone who has proudly called Florida home for over 50 years, I believe this bill represents exactly the kind of leadership that has made our state a national model.

Florida is showing the rest of the country that the government can still prioritize merit over ideology, unity over division, and taxpayers over bureaucracy.

And as a taxpayer here, that is something worth celebrating.
