Weiner Rises Again: Friends Urge Disgraced Dem to Run For Office

Disgraced former congressman and registered sex offender Anthony Weiner is being urged by friends to return to the political arena. While speaking on the Left Versus The Right podcast on Saturday, co-host Curtis Sliwa threw out the idea of Weiner taking on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for her congressional seat, saying he “and others” had long been encouraging Weiner to launch a political comeback. Weiner had served in Congress for over a decade before a series of widely-publicized sexting scandals set his career on fire, eventually landing him in prison after sending explicit photos to an underage girl. He has co-hosted his podcast with Sliwa since 2021.

“He has been encouraged to run for office by me and others,” Sliwa told listeners on Saturday, referring to his Democrat counterpart on the show. “When politics is in your blood as it is in his, I don’t think you ever rule it out.”

Sliwa, the Republican nominee for New York City mayor in 2021, even went as far as to suggest that the “moderate Democrat” could issue a challenge to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“To be the moderate Democrat, to be what this city needs now to take it back from AOC. He knows the moderate path to save the city.”

Weiner first entered Congress in 1999, replacing Chuck Schumer as the representative for New York’s ninth district. He would later resign in 2011 under pressure from a sexting scandal–his first of several.

In 2013, Weiner returned to politics and threw his hat in the ring for New York City mayor, only for his ambitions to go up in flames once again. Several months after his return, he was again exposed for sending explicit images to another woman under the alias of “Carlos Danger.”

In 2016, Weiner would again make headlines after sending an explicit photo of himself to another woman, this time while lying in bed beside his young son. The next day, his wife, Huma Abedin, announced she intended to separate.

The following month, Weiner was charged after sexting with a 15-year-old girl. He was sentenced to 21 months and was ordered to register as a sex offender permanently.

After his release, he briefly kept a low profile, serving as CEO of a Brooklyn-based granite countertop company, but would find his way back into the public eye as the co-host of Left Versus The Right with Sliwa in 2021.

Speaking about his co-host’s seedy past, Sliwa suggested that he could pull off a political comeback, but only if he were upfront about “the subject of his problems.”

“There’s always going to be misgivings lingering. That will never go away… He has to constantly speak out on the subject of his problems and how you can make amends for that. You can become an example. That’s the only way.”

It is unclear if Weiner is taking his friends’ suggestions seriously, though he was spotted at a charity event with his estranged wife last weekend. According to the New York Post, the two sat side-by-side at the Inner Circle charity show in Midtown Manhattan, “which is a major event that brings both the city media and political worlds together for a night of Broadway-like comic skits.” Abedin was reportedly followed by a reporter after saying goodnight to Weiner in the lobby but refused to answer any questions.
