[Video] Pancake Collapse in NYC Parking Garage Leaves 1 Dead, Several Injured
A terrifying scene unfolded in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday after a parking garage partially collapsed, leaving multiple people injured and at least one person confirmed dead.
Local reports say the floors of the four-story building collapsed around 4:15 p.m., sending cars crashing below.
According to senior FDNY officials, the second floor of the five-story parking garage collapsed into the first floor, creating a cascading effect. The garage’s top floor reportedly fell all the way down into the cellar in a pancake collapse.

“As far as we can tell, so far there were six patients, six workers in the building at the time of the collapse,” FDNY Chief of Operations John Esposito said, with one worker who was trapped on one of the upper floors. The FDNY evacuated that person across to the roof of another building, and he was taken to the hospital from there.
Esposito described the rescue operation as “extremely dangerous” due to the unstable building, and firefighters who had initially entered the building were forced to retreat.
The department sent a newly added NYPD robotic dog, known as DigiDog, into the building to analyze the scene and ensure no one else was inside without jeopardizing the safety of first responders.
According to Esposito, drones were also being used to get additional information from the scene.

New York City’s Department of Buildings (DOB) was at the scene shortly after the collapse. The DOB commissioner said the structure was five stories tall, including the cellar and four stories above ground, and was used throughout as a parking garage.
According to the DOB, the building had active permits for electrical work on the premises, though there were no active violations. The building obtained its certificate of occupancy in 1957.
The FDNY said that due to the extreme instability of the building, it is expected that the investigation into the collapse will be a prolonged operation.
