On February 21, 2023, the FCSO School Resource Deputies assigned to Matanzas High School were alerted to a paraprofessional employee being physically attacked on campus. Upon arrival, deputies located the female staffer on the ground with severe injuries after an unprovoked attack by a male student.

Deputies say that a female staffer took the student’s Nintendo Switch away during class, which upset him.

Surveillance video from the school then shows the student running out of the classroom in the staffer’s direction and pushing her, which sent her airborne 5 to 6 feet. As soon as she landed on the floor, she was knocked unconscious.

“This could have been a homicide,” Staly said. “When you push people down like that, they hit their head; you never know the outcome.”

The student is then shown kicking and punching the unconscious victim several times in the back and head. Others rushed in to help the victim, who was unconscious during the entire assault and unable to protect herself.

“Fortunately, other students and other faculty members, administrators came and intervened,” Staly said.

The student faces a felony aggravated battery charge and possible school discipline, including expulsion. After the incident, he reportedly started to spit at the victim and threatened to kill her when he returned.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. The school district has decided not to share information about the teacher’s aide’s current condition due to privacy concerns.

The victim is a teacher’s aide who has been with the district since 2004 but only recently became a teacher’s aide, starting at Matanzas in 2021.

Due to confidentiality concerns, the district is not releasing any information about the student involved in the attack.

The school has two school resource deputies (SRDs) on campus, but it took several minutes for them to arrive due to the large size of the school.

The student was escorted from the area and later placed in custody. The 17-year-old student was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and later turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice. The student has been charged with Felony Aggravated Battery with Bodily Harm.

At one point, the suspect can be heard saying “f–k you” to one of the deputies, then “I don’t want to go to jail,” the suspect said.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said the student’s actions were uncalled for.

“The actions of this student are absolutely horrendous and completely uncalled for,” Staley said. “We hope the victim will be able to recover, both mentally and physically, from this incident. Thankfully, students and staff members came to the victim’s aid before the SRDs could arrive. Our schools should be a safe place – for both employees and students.”
