During a Homeland Security meeting on Wednesday, embattled Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas faced intense criticism from former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott.
The Committee hearing may be the latest escalation in a potential attempt to impeach Mayorkas, something Republicans have floated for the last year.
Scott said that Mayorkas had actively frustrated efforts to stem the tide of mass illegal immigration at the border and froze out Border Patrol agents when they attempted to give input.

“Do you know firsthand if Customs and Border Patrol agents actually advised Mr. Mayorkas and said, ‘Hey, you need to reverse these policies to stop this tidal wave that’s coming into the United States’?” asked Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla.

“He was informed verbally. He was informed in writing,” Scott said. “I think it’s important for everybody to understand [that] everything fundamentally changed. When I worked for Secretary [Chad] Wolf, we had team meetings and were asked for input. We were told, ‘Over your career, what works and what doesn’t work?’ On Jan. 20, 2021, that all got shut off.”
Republicans on the Committee established that Mayorkas has been ‘derelict’ in his duties, perhaps as a precursor to impeaching him from his position.

Scott said that when he and other Border Patrol agents tried to give input about the shambolic situation at the southern border, the Department of Homeland Security leadership retaliated against them.
“Our input was no longer solicited, and when my team and I gave it unsolicited, we were basically put in a box,” he continued. “They did not want to know what we had to say. They made it very clear: Expedite processing and find new ways to let migrants into the U.S. That was the only agenda.”
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Mark Green, R-Tn. set the stage for a potential impeachment after saying that Mayorkas has ‘violated or subverted’ at least ten laws.
“We know right now that Secretary Mayorkas has either violated or subverted at least ten laws passed by the Congress of the United States. He has ignored multiple court orders to cease and desist his activities.”

Green further said that after the hearing, Mayorkas and the Biden administration have shown a ‘blatant disregard for the Constitution.’

“The blatant disregard for the Constitution of the United States, which states that the United States Congress passes the laws and the executive branch executes those laws, is just scratching the surface of the harm Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty has done to our country,” He said.
Some Representatives, such as Representative Andy Biggs, R-Az. did not play coy about their intention to impeach Mayorkas.
“In under 90 seconds, a legal expert rattled off four statutes DHS Secretary Mayorkas has violated while serving under President Biden. The evidence is clear. DHS Secretary Mayorkas is in dereliction of his duties and ought to be impeached.” Biggs said.
A cabinet Secretary has only been successfully impeached once in United States history, when Secretary of War William Belknap was impeached in 1876.
