Unpopular CDC Director Rochelle Walensky Resigns

Wildy unpopular U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky announced on Friday that she is stepping down from her role and plans to leave the agency in late June.

In her resignation letter to President Joe Biden, Walensky referenced the official end of COVID-19 as a public health emergency as part of the impetus for leaving. She also mentioned part of her goal as a director was to make the CDC more trusted.

“The end of the COVID-19 public health emergency marks a tremendous transition for our country, for public health, and in my tenure as CDC Director. I took on this role, at your request, with the goal of leaving behind the dark days of the pandemic and moving CDC — and public health — forward into a much better and more trusted place. In the process, we saved and improved lives and protected the country and the world from the greatest infectious disease threat we have seen in over 100 years.”

“I have never been prouder of anything I have done in my professional career,” she wrote in her letter to Biden.

Unfortunately, a recent Harvard study revealed that as of 2023, only 23%  of Americans trust health agency recommendations.

In a thank-you statement from the White House, Biden praised Walensky’s performance.

“Dr. Walensky has saved lives with her steadfast and unwavering focus on the health of every American. As Director of the CDC, she led a complex organization on the front lines of a once-in-a-generation pandemic with honesty and integrity. She marshalled our finest scientists and public health experts to turn the tide on the urgent crises we’ve faced….”

Biden went so far as to say Walensky “leaves CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans. We have all benefited from her service and dedication to public health, and I wish her the best in her next chapter.”

The CDC also released a statement on the matter. It said that Walensky “successfully addressed a multinational mpox outbreak, contained the spread of Ebola in Uganda, and responded to countless infectious disease threats in countries around the globe.”

Full CDC statement:

“CDC launched a center for forecasting and outbreaks and secured hundreds of millions of dollars to begin modernizing our nation’s data infrastructure,” the CDC explained.

Observers on Twitter, however, were less impressed with her performance. One user posted a video of Walensky claiming the vaccine prevented people from getting sick or carrying COVID-19, a notion that was not true regarding the now-dominant Omicron variant.

Other Twitter users were similarly displeased.
