Trump Vows to ‘Save New York’ in Historic Rally Drawing 25,000

5Former President Donald Trump held a historic rally Thursday in South Bronx’s Crotona Park–one of the deepest blue areas of New York. An estimated 25,000 supporters turned out to support the presumptive GOP nominee, far surpassing the 3,500 the Trump campaign said they were expecting. Drawing applause from the crowd, Trump praised his once home state of New York but said it had become “a city in decline” due to rampant crime, homelessness, and waves of migrants. He vowed to be the first Republican presidential nominee to win the state in forty years.

“Vey sadly, in recent years, we have also seen our city destroyed by a bad radical left pro-crime policy that virtually everyone – Republican, Democrat, Independent, everyone – you all know it’s a disaster,” Trump told the audience. “You know the names of these lunatic policies: No cash bail…defund our great police, sanctuary cities, release violent repeat offenders from jail,” Trump said, adding that President Joe Biden “supports all of this insanity and more…”

“But millions of people across New York know it’s crazy… I’m here tonight to declare we are going to turn New York City around, and we are going to turn it around very, very quickly. We are going to make New York bigger, better and greater than ever before.”

If elected in November, Trump promised to work with Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams to clean up New York City. Trump also railed against the economic woes brought by the Biden administration, arguing that black and Hispanic working-class families had been most seriously affected.

“I’ve never seen it quite like this. If a New Yorker can’t save this city, no one can,” Trump said, receiving booming applause. “Who said we’re not going to win New York?”

In 2016, Trump received just 10 percent of the vote in the Bronx before bringing it up to 16 percent in the 2020 election. According to current polling, however, Biden’s lead over Trump is slipping in the state. A recent poll by Siena College found Biden held just a 9-point lead over the former President, at 47 percent to 38 percent. Biden had previously won the state by 61 percent.

Trump also addressed issues of rampant crime in New York, referencing the murder of one officer during a traffic stop in March. The former President noted that the killer had more than 20 prior arrests under New York’s cashless bail system.

“The criminal charged with savagely murdering Officer Diller was previously arrested by the NYPD 21 times, and he was allowed to go out because of the political things they do here… These dangerous and violent repeat offenders should never have been on our streets. Jonathan should be alive today, but they were released again and again and again,”

“We’re not going to stand for it. We will not let them destroy our communities. We will not let them destroy our country,” Trump said.
