Trump Trial: Closing Arguments to Begin in Business Records Case
Closing arguments are set to begin in former President Donald Trump’s Manhattan business records trial. After six weeks of trial proceedings, Trump’s attorneys are preparing to give their final arguments on Tuesday in the hopes of persuading the twelve jurors who will decide on the 34 felony charges facing the former President. Depending on the length of the statements, closing arguments could last into Wednesday.
Trump’s team will present their final arguments first, followed by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s prosecutors. In a Truth Social post published Monday, Trump railed against the order of the statements, calling it “corrupt.”

Throughout the trial, prosecutors have argued that Trump falsified business records about an alleged ‘hush money’ payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Trump’s attorneys, in turn, have argued that he is not guilty “beyond a reasonable doubt” and that the prosecution’s case does not meet the threshold of a conviction.

Trump has also been highly critical of the trial and presiding Judge Juan Merchan, which, at one point, resulted in a gag order being imposed. He has accused Merchan of running a biased courtroom. On Monday, he noted the Democrat judge had refused to allow his legal team to subpoena multiple witnesses. “Could somebody please ask Judge Merchan whatever happened to MARK POMERANTZ, the man Alvin Bragg was furious at for what he did on this contrived and unconstitutional case, and why wasn’t he allowed to testify?” Trump wrote. “Also, why did Judge Merchan not allow Brad Smith, the leading Election Law Expert in the Country, to testify? He would have ended the case quickly by explaining the Law and stating that President Trump did nothing wrong.”
“Likewise Bob Costello, and all of his direct and irrefutable knowledge, why was he so horribly treated and completely shut down by the Conflicted Judge, and why were his Emails and Text Messages not allowed to be shown…And then, of course, there’s the BIGGEST EVENT OF THEM ALL, but I’m not allowed to talk about it because I’m under an illegal and unconstitutional GAG ORDER. This is the Biden White House at work. ELECTION INTERFERENCE!” ~ Donald Trump via Truth Social
After attending the court last week, Harvard legal scholar Alan Dershowitz wrote of Merchan’s bias, variously referring to him as a “tyrant” and a “despot” in a New York Post op-ed. “The judge in Donald Trump’s trial was an absolute tyrant, though he appeared to the jury to be a benevolent despot. He seemed automatically to be ruling against the defendant at every turn.”

Despite Democrats’ efforts to capitalize on the weeks-long trial, American voters do not appear to be persuaded against the former President. A recent Quinnipiac poll indicated that most voters would not vote differently based on a conviction, with 24 percent answering that a guilty verdict would make them ‘more’ likely to vote for Trump. Only 6 percent of voters say they would be less likely to vote for Trump if he is convicted.
