Trump Slams Gov. Gavin ‘Newscum’ Over Record Surge at the Border

Former President Donald Trump traveled Thursday to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas, where he slammed multiple top Democrats for their role in the border crisis. While speaking in Eagle Pass, Trump criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for incentivizing illegal immigration to his state before debuting a new nickname.

“I mean, you look at what this Governor Newscum from California. Isn’t that his name? Newscum,” Trump said during his address.

“What he’s done to California is unbelievable. People are pouring in, they think they’re going to get medical aid, and our soldiers, our vets, aren’t being taken care of, but people that come into our country illegally are,”

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data, California has experienced a surge of illegal crossings in recent weeks. As many as 8,659 migrants were apprehended by San Diego border agents in the first week of February, with Chinese nationals making up an increased portion of arrests. In 2021, just 450 Chinese migrants were apprehended at the Southwest border. In 2022, that increased to 2,176 before exploding to 24,314.

Overall, migrant encounters in San Diego are reportedly up 73 percent compared to last year.

Trump visited Eagle Pass when President Joe Biden met with border agents in Brownsville, Texas, accompanied by embattled DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Biden began his speech discussing wildfires in Oklahoma and Texas, urging immediate action on climate change. He later urged lawmakers to pass a border security bill that critics say would allow up to 5,000 illegal crossings per day.

Taking a shot at his opponent, Trump lamented the rise in “Biden migrant crime” and said that America has been dealing with “a Biden invasion over the past three years.”

“Crooked Joe has the blood of countless innocent victims. It’s so many stories to tell, so many horrible stories. Three years ago, we had the most secure border in history… We had the most secure border and people weren’t coming because they knew they weren’t going to get in. And we weren’t promising free education, free medical, free everything. I mean, all the promises that are made, no wonder they come.”

Trump’s remarks targeting Governor Newsom marked a change in tone from last spring when he told interviewer Tucker Carlson that he “used to get along great with him when I was president.” Trump previously had no nickname for the California governor.

“We got along really good, Gavin… He was always very nice to me. He said the greatest things. He would say things like ‘Oh, he’s doing a great job,’” Trump said. “That’s why I could never hit him because he was so nice to me.”

On Wednesday, Trump also explained that he had retired the nickname “crooked” about opponent Hillary Clinton–instead choosing to apply it to Joe Biden. “I took the name away from Hillary because she’s no longer relevant; I guess she was terrible, but what he’s doing is just unbelievable,” Trump said.

“I call him ‘Crooked Joe’ because he’s crooked, he’s a terrible president, he’s the worst president our country’s ever had, probably the most incompetent president we’ve ever had.”
