Three-Year-Old Shoots Mom & Her Boyfriend Who’s Wanted for Murder
Trayshawn Smith, 23, and his Girlfriend, Jalynn Artis, 21, were taken to the hospital after Jalynn’s 3 -year-old picked up a gun at an apartment in Indiana last week and opened fire, wounding both his mother and Smith.
Smith happened to be wanted in connection with a murder case in Chicago.
Authorities in Lafayette, Indiana, say that the shooting occurred at the Romney Meadows apartment complex and left Trayshawn Malik Smith, 23, and Jalynn Artis, 21, with non-life-threatening injuries.
Smith and Artis went to Franciscan Health Lafayette East Hospital to be treated for those injuries resulting from a single gunshot.
Lt. Justin Hartman with the Lafayette Police Department told USA TODAY that Police were called to the hospital around 8:31 p.m. Thursday about two people who were shot.
“A 3-year-old child at that location accessed a gun and fired one round striking two people,” he wrote in an email. “Neither injury was life-threatening.”
Hartman said it’s standard protocol for hospitals to call the police when someone shows up with gunshot wounds.
The Lafayette Police Department began its investigation and, after running a background check, found that Smith was wanted in connection with a Cook County, Illinois, murder case.
Notably, neither Smith nor Artis lived at the residence where the shooting occurred, according to WTHR, who spoke with the godmother of the boy who fired the gun.

The woman said that Smith and Artis were visiting; Smith is reportedly a Lafayette resident, and Artis lives in Gary.
As of Monday morning, no charges have been issued in the apartment shooting, but Lafayette cops are said to be in contact with the Markham Police Department about Smith’s arrest.
Indiana State Child Services agency was contacted about the shooting.
Smith was booked into Tippecanoe County jail in Indiana, awaiting extradition to Cook County, Illinois.
