Sunny Hostin Attacks ‘Dangerous’ DeSantis for Marine Vet Fundraiser – ‘That Scares Me’

The View co-host Sunny Hostin attacked Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday for promoting the legal defense fund of former marine Daniel Penny, who is currently facing a manslaughter charge in New York City. In a tweet Friday, DeSantis referred to Penny as a “Good Samaritan” for protecting subway passengers from a deranged convicted felon, ultimately enraging Hostin, who called the governor’s actions “dangerous.”

“Remember, he’s a lawyer, Harvard, and Yale-trained and educated. He is not a stupid man. So, he is really leaning into Trumpism, knowing what the base wants, and that scares me,” Hostin said to her co-hosts. “He actually tweeted out about the — you know, the young man that was killed on a subway with a chokehold by a former Marine, Jordan Neely, he actually is fundraising for his defense, and he’s made $2 million already for killing a young black man.”

Absent from The View’s discussion were Neely’s 42 prior arrests, including the attempted kidnapping of a 7-year-old child and the felony assault of a 67-year-old woman, which he had recently pled guilty to. Penny and two other men subdued Neely on May 1 after he began threatening other passengers on the subway.

Penny’s GiveSendGo fundraiser received a sizable boost after DeSantis shared a link to the page. As of Tuesday, it has received more than $2.4 million.

“We must defeat the Soros-Funded DAs, stop the Left’s pro-criminal agenda, and take back the streets for law-abiding citizens,” DeSantis said on Friday. “We stand with Good Samaritans like Daniel Penny. Let’s show this Marine… America’s got his back.”

“And you have Ron DeSantis, who’s a lawyer, who says he is actually not a — he’s not a vigilante, that he’s this great guy. When in New York, it’s just a reckless killing, and he was reckless in doing that,” Hostin added. “So, for a lawyer to say what we’re hearing, Ron DeSantis – just tells me how dangerous he is.”

After co-host and Florida resident Ana Navarro attacked DeSantis as a culture war “parasite,” Hostin accused the governor of being in the business of “otherizing people.” Hostin explained that she is most afraid of DeSantis for his effectiveness on culture issues and his ability to offer “Trumpism without Trump.”

“But what I will say: what scares me about Ron DeSantis is that he offers Trumpism without Trump. So, those people so repelled by Donald Trump, and there are many people, won’t be as repelled by him, I think. And those manufactured culture issues seem to be very effective with that base, that particular base, and part of the Republican Party as well. Definitely the right-wing part. I think that he can be effective.”

After Hostin finished her tirade about the “dangerous” Florida Governor, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin chipped in that despite The View’s outrage; Penny should be allowed his day in court,

“And everyone is entitled to a legal defense, though. And I’ve been clear on what I think of Jordy Neely — what amounted to manslaughter is what he’s being charged with.”
