Sparks Fly: Nikki Haley and Trump Immediately Begin Trading Blows

Former Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley announced her presidential campaign on Wednesday, taking multiple swipes at Donald Trump and Joe Biden over age.

The Former South Carolina governor laid out her vision of the future of America, and elderly politicians were not in it.

“In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire. We’ll have term limits for Congress. And mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old.”

Haley specified that this wasn’t just a throwaway take but a core part of her view of the country.

“America is not past our prime. It’s just that our politicians are past theirs. We won’t win the fight for the 21st Century if we keep trusting politicians from the 20th Century,”

Haley was not just jabbing at Biden, who she said “isn’t leading from behind, he’s not leading at all,” but likely making a veiled barb at Trump, immediately following up her comments referencing age with notes about the issue.

“I have a particular message for my fellow Republicans,” said Haley. “We’ve lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections. Our cause is right, but we have failed to win the confidence of a majority of Americans….If you’re tired of losing, put your trust in a new generation.”

Haley continued this theme throughout her speech. She promised to keep schools open, stand up to China and support Ukraine. Haley used the tagline that America is “strong and proud, not woke and weak.”

Trump certainly took offense, releasing a statement titled “The Real Nikki Haley,” which included a list of Haley’s positions and opinions that Trump deems unbecoming.

The list starts with a statement by Haley from 2012, where she says that Hilary Clinton is why she got into politics. It’s quickly followed by a more extensive section slamming Haley for questioning Social Security and Medicare. One quote from Haley reads, “What they need to be doing is looking at entitlements. Look at Social Security. Look at Medicaid. Look at Medicare. Look at these things, and let’s go to the heart of what’s causing the Government to grow and tackle that.”

Trump also bashed Haley on her position on Ukraine, which has included continuing material aid instead of finding what Trump refers to as a “peaceful solution.” Other policies in Trump’s crosshairs included Haley’s softness on the border and her lack of support for a “Transgender bathroom bill to protect children.” At the end of the list, Trump wrote “Haley Flip-Flops on 2024 Race”, citing a statement by Haley in 2021 where she vowed she would not throw her hat in the ring of the 2024 presidential race if Former President Trump were also running.
