Republicans Rip Hunter Biden & DOJ ‘Coverup’ – ‘There’s Ulterior Motives’

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to oversee the investigation of Hunter Biden this week, and top Republicans are suspicious. The first son is facing a slew of legal troubles relating to tax and gun charges. With negotiations between prosecutors and Hunter’s attorneys falling through, a criminal trial could be imminent. As Hunter Biden’s (and his father’s) position grows more desperate, Republicans are sounding off about ulterior motives in appointing Special Counsel David Weiss.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer was among the first to raise alarm bells over a DOJ “coverup.”

“The Justice Department’s misconduct and politicization in the Biden criminal investigation already allowed the statute of limitations to run concerning egregious felonies committed by Hunter Biden,” Comer said in a statement Friday.

“Justice Department officials refused to follow evidence that could have led to Joe Biden, tipped off the Biden transition team and Hunter Biden’s lawyers about planned interviews and searches and attempted to sneakily place Hunter Biden on the path to a sweetheart plea deal.

We [the House Oversight Committee] will also continue to work with the House Committees on Judiciary and Ways and Means to root out misconduct at the Justice Department and hold bad actors accountable for weaponizing law enforcement powers,”

“This action by Biden’s DOJ cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or whitewash the Biden family corruption,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy tweeted on Friday. He expressed distrust over David Weiss’s appointment, given his role in securing an extraordinarily generous “sweetheart deal” for Hunter Biden, which a judge recently axed.

“If Weiss negotiated the sweetheart deal that couldn’t get approved, how can he be trusted as a Special Counsel? House Republicans will continue to pursue the facts for the American people.”

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley–who previously spearheaded an investigation into the Bidens’ shady business dealings–at first reacted positively to the news of a special counsel appointment, telling the Daily Mail, “It’s about time.” Special counsels are generally appointed to protect an investigation from political pressure.

But after hearing that David Weiss had received the appointment, Grassley shared in McCarthy’s skepticism,

“Did they appoint him special counsel so he doesn’t have to testify before the Congress of the United States?” Grassley speculated to the outlet. “If that’s your game – then I’d say there’s ulterior motives.”

Governor Ron DeSantis also reacted to the news while campaigning in Iowa, saying, “I also just saw the news about the Hunter Biden Special Counsel. It just seems to me that they’re gonna find a way to give him some type of soft glove treatment.”

“And I don’t understand why you would appoint this guy to be the special counsel… But we’ve come to expect that, and so I think that there was a lot that he’s done, particularly with the corruption, that really should be pursued.”
