Rep. Steube: Gov’t Workers Making 40% More Than Private Workers
Florida Congressman Greg Steube (R) says Americans are living in a socialist “pipe dream” in the wake of a new report that government employees are earning as much as 40 percent more than private-sector workers. The study published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) earlier this month found that state and local government workers had earned an average of $60.56 per hour in December 2023, compared to the average rate of $43.11 for private-sector workers.
“We’re walking down the … pipe dream that is a ‘Democrat’ communist socialist state,” Steube said Wednesday in an interview with Newsmax host Carl Higbie.
“Everybody is either on some kind of government subsidy, or they work for the government, and that’s how you control the people. We’ve seen it even here in the House when” former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi busted all the salary caps for all of our staff. She increased by like $400,000 the amount you can pay staff.”
The Florida Congressman went on to say that government bloat was part and parcel of the Democrat playbook,
“This is the long game they’ve had since Obama: to get as many people in government as possible on government subsidies and then increase their salaries.”
While federal employees were excluded from the BLS study, a March 13 report by ZipRecruiter estimated their average hourly pay to be $51.18, or nearly 20 percent more than private-sector workers.

For years, Republicans have called for the downsizing of the federal government, which currently employs nearly 3 million people. During the 2024 GOP primary, several candidates promised to cut the federal workforce, including political newcomer Vivek Ramaswamy, who vowed a reduction of 75 percent.
During his time in the White House, then-President Donald Trump had taken steps to “fire the swamp” through the use of executive orders. The COVID-19 pandemic eventually derailed those plans, and his “Schedule F” order was later undone by the Biden administration.
In July 2022, however, Trump called for the measure to be reimplemented and for federal employees advancing “wokeism and corruption” to be fired.
“To drain the swamp, we need to fire the swamp. With schedule F, I took executive action to make it possible to fire federal employees who are bypassing our democracy to advance wokeism and corruption,” said during a Turning Point USA summit.
“We now need Congress to institute historic reforms to permanently empower the President to root out the Deep State, and ensure that any bureaucrat who is corrupt, incompetent, or unnecessary can be told, ‘You’re fired,’”

Since launching his re-election campaign, Trump has made repeated promises to root out corruption in the federal government. According to a report by Axios, as many as 50,000 government workers could be on the chopping block if Trump returns to the White House in 2024.
